    Hello all,

When I use XP's utility to analyze my disk fragmentation, it says "You should defragment this volume", but the defrag process hangs when it is about 1% done. Defragging when booted into Safe Mode doesn't solve the problem.

I searched around, and it seems like this might have to do with my FAT32 disk partitions (see my specs). What do you guys think? What would be the next steps?

    Thanks!

    Rex

how much free space do you have on the disk? You need at least 15% for the windows system to defrag.

    Hi valis,

I have 17% free space. (I initially had less than that free, but I deleted files so the defrag could run.)

Sorry, I should have been clearer. When I initially posted I already had 17% free, but the defrag process was still hanging. So I'm still trying to fix the problem.

Have you tried Defraging in Safe Mode? . . Tap F8 repeatedly after pressing the power button

Yes, I tried Safe Mode; no luck.

I have Windows XP w/ SP2 installed alongside Ubuntu Linux on a FAT32 partition. (I boot with Windows 99% of the time.) Would this be a problem?

You are trying to defrag the NTSF partition, so that should not be an issue . . In my COmputer, right click on the drive . . select Properties . . click on the Tools tab and have it check the drive for errors . . put checks in both subsequent boxes . . it will restart and run chkdsk . . will take a while depending on the size of the partition

Sorry, XP and Linux are on two different partitions. They are both FAT32.

I corrected that information in my specs.

do disk cleanup/system tools before defragging and ck all the boxes and click ok.

you'll free up a lot of space.

if you haven't defragged in a while and have a hd over 40g, it'll take a while.

    Hi everyone,

Thanks for the help! I managed to defrag it. I did the following:

-Check the disk for and remove all errors
    -Do disk cleanup
    -Boot in Safe Mode, defrag
-I managed to defrag partially. (Some files could not be defragged.)
-Ran Sysinternals' PageDefrag to defrag my pagefile

    Everything is in great shape.

    Best,

    Rex
