Hello Folks,

I have a Dell B130 that has ridiculously slow performance. I haven't used the laptop in quite some time, but want to start using it again. The laptop will only be used to run some coffee roasting profiling software and a couple of other programs, so most of the programs can be removed. I'm just not sure if I have some malware or other issues. The Hijack This log is detailed below. Any assistance/feedback would be greatly appreciated!!

You are missing out on important Windows Updates.
Download: Windows XP Service Pack 3.
http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=24

Or turn on Automatic Updates and let Windows update to SP3.
How to configure and use Automatic Updates in Windows
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306525

We will then need to see the latest Hjt log 2.04
Hijack this 2.04
-----
Check and post
TSG System Information Utility - found here.
http://library.techguy.org/wiki/TSG_Valuable_links
------
Download Security Check by screen317
http://screen317.spywareinfoforum.org/
Save it to your Desktop.

Double click the install icon.
A command Prompt window will open.
Let it scan the Pc - press any key when asked.
It should now open in Notepad - and will save a log called checkup.txt.
Post the result of the scan here.

I'm going to assume that your laptop is a Dell Inspiron B130.

What's the 7-character "service tag" number that's on the sticker?

----------------------------------------------------------

Right-click MY COMPUTER, then click Properties.

Advise what's listed in the Computer: section at the bottom of the "General" tab - EXACTLY as you see it there.

Start > Run - Type
msconfig
Under the Start Up Tab.
Untick all entries Except

Broadcom Wireless Manager UI] C:\WINDOWS\system32\WLTRAY.exe

RAM: 503 Mb
You need to add more Ram - 503Mb - not enough to run Xp these days.
Run the online scan to see what type of Ram is installed and what can be added.

Thanks flavallee!

Service Tag sticker from bottom of laptop = FL8DQ91

My Computer Info...

System:
Microspft Windows XP
Home Edition
Version 2002
Service Pack 3

Dell Inspiron ME051
Intel(R) Celeron(R) M
processor 1.50GHz
1.50 GHz, 504 MB of RAM
Physical Address Extension
According to service tag number FL8DQ91, your laptop is a Dell Inspiron 1300/B130.

Here is the support and software site that's specific only to your laptop.

You might want to add and save this site in your browser favorites/bookmarks list so you can readily refer to it when needed.

According to its original configuration information, it was purchased in March 2006 and came with 512 MB(256 MB x 2) of DDR2 PC2-4200 RAM.

It supports up to 2 GB of RAM, so you should replace those 256 MB modules with 512 MB modules or 1 GB modules.

Between the combination of it having a low-end Intel Celeron 1.50 GHz processor and only 512 MB of RAM, it's going to run like a turtle until you add more RAM.

Thanks again for all the help guys!
Couple of items of note and questions if you don't mind...

- When I went to msconfig to uncheck everything except the Broadcom Wireless Manager and Norton I couldn't locate Norton, so the only item I check is the Broadcom wireless mgr

- For the McAfee Spam Killer it doesn't show up in Add/Remove Programs. Can I just delete the folder start from C: drive?

- Any recommendations on cheap places to get the memory (I'm in the US - Colorado)? When I search on 1GB memory for Dell B130's I get a lot of different matches, but many vary on the specifics (i.e. some are PC2-6400 and some are PC2-4200) ***EDIT - I ended up ordering the Crucial memory from Amazon. 99% sure it's the correct memory... http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000FQ2JLW/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00

Here are the log files requested....

Any recommendations on cheap places to get the memory (I'm in the US - Colorado)? When I search on 1GB memory for Dell B130's I get a lot of different matches, but many vary on the specifics (i.e. some are PC2-6400 and some are PC2-4200) ***EDIT - I ended up ordering the Crucial memory from Amazon. 99% sure it's the correct memory... http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000FQ2JLW/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00
This is the recommended 2 GB DDR2 PC2-5300(DDR2-667) SODIMM kit from the Crucial site.

The 2 GB kit you ordered from the Amazon site appears to have the correct specs. (y)

Disconnect the power adapter and remove the battery from the laptop before you open the compartment to remove/replace the modules.

Good luck.

The McAfee Removal tool worked perfectly! New RAM arrives on Thursday, so I'll report back then but everything looks good so far. Performance is definitely better now. Also freed up a ton of harddrive space by moving old pictures, videos, etc over to my external HD.

Thanks Again!
