I can't imagine what Dell are trying to tell you, if you have an internet connection you should be able to download whatever you want.

What do they say you need to upgrade?

What prevents you downloading?

You don't have to pay Dell anything for antivirus software.

Here is a quick list of a few of my favorites (in order of preference):
Microsoft Security Essentials
Avast!
AVG

There are these and many more free antiviruses out there that perform just as well (if not better) than antivirus software Dell might want to sell to you.

I bought a anti virus from Eset and when I went to download it my computer says i don't have appropriate permissions to access the item. Dell told me my sofware on computer out of date and that there was three ways from for them to fix it starting at €110

You're not able to download these?

Try accessing Safe Mode With Networking and then downloading them from there.

How to Access Safe Mode With Networking

While the computer is turning on, tap F8 once every second until a black screen with white text appears. Using your arrow keys highlight the option Safe Mode With Networking and hit Enter.

Note: If you're using Windows XP, connect to your modem or router with an Ethernet cable, then follow these directions.

You should be able to download it to a folder on your computer. When the download option shows, select save.and put it in that folder. After you disconnect from the internet, you can go there and click on it to install it. It is possible that your firewall or other security program may be blocking the download. Also, some computers will get a line just above the site you are trying to d/l from that asks you for permission to download. If you click on that line there will be the option to allow the download. (this is usually a cream colored line across the page)

I'm not really sure how I fixed it to be honest it, I found the file in my downloads and went to properties there was a unblock button somewhere in there, I'm not very good with computers so it was a real fluke.
