When I click on the desktop icons, they no longer open maximized. Is there an easy fix other than clicking the maximize button? I would like them to always open maximized. Thank you.

maximize the windows by stretching them with your mouse, dont click on maximize, the next time you open the window it should open to the the same size you closed it last....... does that make sense?

try this, once you have stretched the window to the size you want

Click on tools/ folder options/ view tab/ then click apply to all folders

When I get the first screen when starting my computer it gives me a msg that says all icon can't be shown without reducing their size. How do you do that, please.

You mean the icons in the start menu?

Right click the start button/ properties/ customize

you can set the icons to small in there
Hope that is what you mean

Tried it and it didn't work. Also tried it again and clicked on tools, but didn't see folder options so I couldn't do the View and click apply to all folders. Thank you.

Again, thank you for your encouragement. I am glad I stumbled across this forum. We have had a computer since 2000 and I breathe a sigh of relief every day when it works without a hitch. Who would have thought when I graduated from high school 40 years ago that a day would come when in an instant someone from Scotland would help me solve a problem which seemed unsolvable, and so nicely as well. I have seen some forums where they treat people like me as total idiots. Kate
