I don't know if this is the correct forum but I am using W7 so I'll start here.
I was recently infected by some viruses and other stuff and now, after my local repair shop "fixed" it, my desktop icons won't move. I did an auto arrange and they aligned themselves but I want to move some so they are adjacent to other related icons. The repair shop wants to charge $60 to trouble shoot and look for the cause. I'll try my "tech world' instead.

Sorry if you have already tried this!
Can you not hold the icon down with left clicker and drag and drop the icon to the place you want it??
Have you right clicked on the desk top and clicked on view??

    Gary and Derek,
Sorry guys, neither of those solutions worked. I suspect that it is related to the virus, or viruses, I was infected with. The local guys, Tracy Computers, are not very forthcoming with their detective work. Maybe they don't really know what the infections were.

If you followed Derek's instructions, you should be able to freely move your desktop icons anywhere you want to, virus or no virus.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

    Do the following:

Go here, then click the large blue "Download Now @ Bleeping Computer" button to download and save AdwCleaner.exe to your desktop.

Close all open windows first, then double-click AdwCleaner.exe to load its main window.

Click the "Scan" button, then allow the scanning process to finish.
(Note: Several seconds may pass before the scanning process starts, so be patient.)

    Click the "Logfile" button.

When the log appears, save it.

Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the ENTIRE log here.

Note: After you submit the log, close AdwCleaner. If a warning appears, click "Yes".

    Frank,
This is the only place "paste" would take. If it didn't get to you please let me know what I should do differently.

You pasted the log, but the bottom part of it is missing.

    Do the following next.

    ---------------------------------------------------------

Close all open windows first, then double-click AdwCleaner.exe to load its main window.

Click the "Scan" button, then allow the scanning process to finish.
(Note: Several seconds may pass before the scanning process starts, so be patient.)

Click the "Cleaning" button, then click "OK".

Allow the cleaning process to finish.

When it's finished, click "OK" in each window that appears.

    The computer will restart.

When the log appears during restart, save it.

Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the ENTIRE log here.

Please complete the second part of post #7 so we can see what the log looks like after the cleaning process is done.

Here it is Frank. I already know that what ever ADW cleaned fixed the problem. Icons now move freely. I guess you could say that AdwCleaner is sort of a software laxative. Har, har. I have another problem that I will start a new thread on rather than drag this one on.
Was there something that I did to mess up my icon movement?

I'm glad to hear the "cleaning" resolved the problem. :) (y)

I wasn't there, so I don't really know what caused it.
