Hello One-Sunshine. Welcome to the TSG

This is what I suggest you do first.

Make sure you have the up-to-date versions of Spybot and Ad-aware. All are free and available bellow.

Download Spybot, install and update. Then download Ad-aware, install, and update.

    Spybot:
Go to Start > Programs >Spybot > Search & Destroy and choose Spybot S&D

Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D
Click the button to "Search for Updates" and download and install the Updates.
Next click the button "Check for Problems"
When Spybot is complete, it will be showing "RED" (RED) entries "BLACK" entries and "GREEN" (GREEN) entries in the window
Put a check mark beside the RED (RED) entries ONLY.
Choose "Fix Selected Problems" and allow Spybot to fix the RED (RED) entries.

    Ad-Aware FULL SCAN:

Install the program and launch it.

First in the main window look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now then click Connect and download the latest reference files.

From main window :Click Start then under Select a scan Mode tick Perform full system scan.

Next deselect Search for negligible risk entries.

Now to scan just click the Next button.

When the scan is finished mark everything for removal and get rid of it.(Right-click the window and choose select all from the drop down menu and click Next)

Lets also do a couple online scans.

Be sure to list anything they find that they can't fix.

    Before restart, Empty Recycle Bin.

    Restart your computer.

    Post a new HijackThis log.

I see you are running Hijack This from a temp folder now. This is a bad idea because it cannot create and restore backups from there. You need to create a new folder in My Documents and name it Hijack This. Move the hijackthis.exe from the temp folder to the Hijack This folder you created. That way it can create and restore backups if needed. HJT will store the backups in the same location that it is run from.

    Restart to safe mode.

How to start your computer in safe mode

Because XP will not always show you hidden files and folders by default, Go to Start > Search and under "More advanced search options".
Make sure there is a check by "Search System Folders" and "Search hidden files and folders" and "Search system subfolders"

Next click on My Computer. Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and "Hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"
    Click "Apply" then "OK"

Now find and delete these files:

    C:\windows\system32\wineie32.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\??oolsv.exe

Also in safe mode navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Next navigate to the C:\Documents and Settings\Hugh Cowart\Local Settings\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

    Empty the Recycle Bin

    Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
    Click Properties.
    Click the System Restore tab.
    Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn it back on and create a restore point.

    To create a restore point:

Single-click Start and point to All Programs.
Mouse over Accessories, then System Tools, and select System Restore.
In the System Restore wizard, select the box next the text labeled "Create a restore point" and click the Next button.
Type a description for your new restore point. Something like "After trojan/spyware cleanup". Click Create and you're done.

Thanks for working with me on this problem. We are not out of the woods yet. I followed your instructions before. My computer runs a little faster now. I still have a plain white screen for desktop and my cursor and typing tend to lag behind until it catches up. Here is my latest "HiJackThis" log.

Go to Control Panel > Display. Click on the "Desktop" tab. Click on the "Customize Desktop" button. Click on the "Web" tab. Look under "Web Pages" and see if there is an entry there called Security or something similar. Select it and then click the "Delete" button. Click OK > Apply then OK again.

Run Hijack This again and put a check by these. Close ALL windows except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Traybar] C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Sys29] C:\windows\system32\wineie32.exe

Restart to safe mode and delete the C:\windows\system32\wineie32.exe file.

    Empty the Recycle Bin.

Go here and do an online virus scan.

Be sure and put a check in the box by "Auto Clean" before you do the scan. If it finds anything that it cannot clean have it delete it or make a note of the file location so you can delete it yourself.

I think we have reached the summit. It was a difficult climb but we overcame the obsticles. There is still one minor problem. My mouse and typing still do not respond as quick as it should. It is close though. I ran the "house-call" scan and it found no bad files. Attached is another "hijack-this" log.

The log is clean now, but this entry that we removed before has me concerned:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Traybar] C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe

C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe is a legitimate file, but that is not a legitimate startup entry.

    First please do this:

    Go here

Look at the top of the page for the Submit file box.

    Click on Browse

Navigate to the C:\WINDOWS\System32 folder and upload the .... lsass.exe .... file and let us know what you find.

It is posssible that the lsass.exe file has been infected.

    Also do this:

    Download TDS-3 from http://tds.diamondcs.com.au/index.php?page=download

This is a Trial version so you will have to do the update manually.
The automatic update only works with the registered version which costs $49.

Update it following the instructions here:
    http://tds.diamondcs.com.au/index.php?page=update

Under the "Manual Update" right click on the radius.td3 file and choose "Save target as".
Then in the "Save in" box browse to the C:\Program Files\TDS3 folder
(provided that is the location of your TDS-3 directory)and save it there.
A prompt will appear telling you that there is already a radius.td3 file there "do you want to overwrite it" click Yes.

Run the "full System scan" , preferably in safe mode.

Note: Temporarily disable your Antivirus program.
Launch TDS-3 and click on "System Testing" then "Full System Scan" and the scan will begin.

TDS-3 does not automatically remove infected files that it finds. It will display what it has found in the lower portion of the main window and it will either say "Positive Identification etc...." or "Suspicious File". Anything with a positive identification you should right click and delete. Don't do anything with the suspicious ones yet. Right click on any suspicious entry found and choose "Save as Text" then go to the TDS-3 folder (usually C:\Program Files\TDS) and look for a scandump.txt file. Open the scandump.txt file and copy and paste it's contents here. Once we see the scandump file we can determine what to do with the suspicious ones. Many times the suspicious files are harmless.

    OK....I've completed your instructions:

    1. The "virusscan" for the file \system32\1sass.exe showed no virus. However, there were two of these files. One located in windows\system32 and the other in windows\servicepackfiles\i386. Could this be a problem?

    2. I loaded TDS3 and did a full scan. It showed the following:

(a.) One bad file that I deleted.....The file name was:
    C:\windows\gx9fzj83m9.exe

    (b.) Scan Control Dumped @ 15:18:44 12-09-04
(DELETED) Positive identification <Adv>: Possible WebDownloader
    File: c:\windows\gx9fzj83m9.exe

    Suspicious Filename: Dual extensions
    File: c:\program files\adobe\photoshop 7.0\install_toolkit_1.2.0.exe

    3. My mouse and typing continue to hesitate at times...

    4. Here is my most recent "hijack-this" log.

Well your log is clean and if AV scans show up clean we must assume that the problem is with your mouse. The first thing to do would be to uninstall/reinstall the mose drivers.

OK.........I think we have success. I can't tell you how much I appreciate your help resolving my problem. I have one final question. When I type the screen sometimes lags behind my key strokes and the same with the cursor when using the mouse. I have to wait for it to catch up before going on. Any suggestions?

Did you try uninstalling/reinstalling the mouse drivers?

Are the keyboard and mouse wireless?

Also it could be your video drivers. Are you having any other display related problems?

I have not deinstalled the mouse driver primarily because I do not know how to do that. Secondly, I hesitated because I was having same problem with keyboard. Neither are wireless.

Since it is the mouse and the keyboard I would guess that it is more likely a video problem.

Do you know what video card you have?
