I just downloaded AvAST and ran the scan and it found a couple of viruses.
win32:Kuang2 and Win32:SpyBot-A156 [Wrm] were found to have infected a few files in "E:\System Volume Information\_restore...." folder and could not be fixed. I had the files moved to the virus chest. Does it mean that my system restore information is corrupted. Also, is it safe to delete these files?

One more question....How do you know if the program is updating the definitions or not?
I clicked on update but nothing happens.

You need to flush out all previous restore points and create a new one.

    If XP:

    If ME:

I don't know about Avast because I don't use it. Is this what you've been doing to get updates?

Updating: To update Avast, double click on the Avast icon placed on your desktop, and then click on the picture of the lightning bolt located in the bottom left hand corner. If there were updates available, the program will download and install them prompting you to reboot afterwards if necessary.

    hwin32:Kuang2 is a false alarm http://www.avast.com/eng/faq_panda.html

You can set avast to auto update by going into "settings>update and set to auto" It will then tell you whenever it has installed a new update,

Not that I know of. Its one of the few things I don't like about avast (might be worth mentioning it in their forum).

A progress display would help a lot especially with auto update.
Some friends of mine have their outlook express set to hangup after sending and receiving which doesn't give avast enough time resulting in an error message. Progress display would save a lot of confusion.

    Yes.
One more question i have. Why is it that the download files are so small? 5k in the image you attached. But when i used McAfee AV, the files were like 40-200 k.

The updates are quite small, but in saying that the image I attached is only a notice confirming already up to date so the only content is a bit of text. :)

    Me again,
I should point out you can set avast to notify you when updates are available for download and you can also subscribe to email notification.
