Solved: Driver Issue or Hardware?

I get this message, "Display driver NVIDIA Windows Kernel Mode Driver, Version 311.06 stopped responding and has successfully recovered". Shortly after the computer screen turns black freezes up the colors sometimes go funny, sometimes the screen continually flashes..weird things like that. Then I get a blue screen with white text (Passes for like 5 seconds) and then the computer restarts.. I cant even open a window browser before the computer does this.

I am currently typing this on the same computer, but in "Safe Mode" and everything seems to work fine now.

I am currently running Windows 7 64 bit. This is not a new setup, computer hardware is about 8-9 years old at this point..

The graphics card is a NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS

Thanks for the help guys, hopefully I can get my computer back to working condition again.

Tom

Before you go messing with drivers, post your temps and voltages; specifically the cpu temp, system temp, 12V, 5V, and 3.3V values.
Since this is an asus board, you can download and install asus probe. Probe is purpose built monitoring software for your mb and will give you accurate info [which is often NOT the case with hwmonitor or speedfan]

Next I would not be installing the latest driver from nvidia. While the latest driver does support your card, they are really optimized for the latest cards ie the 7xx series and 6xx series. If you do in fact need to reinstall the driver, I would choose one from the driver archive. This will more closely match your actual video card.

In addition, get a bright light and give the mb a VERY close inspection. Look for any capacitors that look like the pics below.

Download and save the

TSG System Information Utility (SysInfo.exe)

After it's been downloaded and saved, double-click it to run it.

Information about your computer will appear.

Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the ENTIRE text here.

---------------------------------------------------------

Download MGADiag to your desktop.

Double-click on MGADiag.exe to launch the program.

Click "Continue".

Ensure that the "Windows" tab is selected (it should be by default).

Click the "Copy" button to copy the MGA Diagnostic Report to the Windows clipboard.

Paste the MGA Diagnostic Report back here in your next reply.

Ah my mistake. I imagine its closer to 7 then. I have had this rig for awhile.. Treated me well this is my first problem other than a bad harddrive about two years ago.

I checked all the capacitors on the Mother Board and none of them seem to be swelled up or leaking, so I am guessing that my motherboard is fine.

Going to try to run Asus Probe now.

Were you in safe mode when you ran the MGA Diagnostic Tool?

It's showing the system is not validated.

What was the original operating system on the machine?

Where did you get the Windows 7 Ultimate license?
I was in safe mode when I ran the MGA as well as the TSG tools.
Is this why it shows my OS is not validated?

Originally I had Vista on this system, but on a different hard drive.

I got the Windows 7 license/CD at a local Micro Center store, brand new in sealed package.

I can not get into windows normally, I am getting an NVIDIA error then a blue screen.

Just out of curiosity what does validating my windows do?
When I try to do it given the link you provided it says can not validate (I assume because I am in safe mode?) and it wants my to buy windows again.

Thanks for your replies, I do appreciate the help.

#18 ·
I purchased it from what I thought was a reputable place.

I just typed in "slui.exe 4" in my windows search to try to validate my windows that way, but it says I can not validate my windows in safe mode.. looks like I am a bit out of luck here with the validation..

Do I need to validate in order to fix my graphics problem or can it be done once I am up and running again?

Thanks, Tom

#20 ·
I would say continue troubleshooting the original problem.
Ok, I would like to validate windows anyway once I get back up and running as I want to make sure what I purchased is 100% genuine just to be sure.

I just tried to run in regular mode, it booted up and immediately then went to the blue screen mentioned earlier..I dont know for sure..but I feel as I am on borrowed time even in safe mode..lol

Edit: Pink dots are now gone after the restart..leads me to believe the graphics card may be at fault here..not sure exactly why this is happening.

#21 ·
Ok, so I uninstalled my drivers for the graphics card so I am no longer in safe mode.
I am now able to validate my version of windows, does what I post below verify that? I didnt get an error this time around.

I am going to reinstall my drivers and see what happens.
