Solved: DVD sizes?

When I try to burn some DVDs onto a DVD+R, the program sometimes tells me the disc is too small to contain everything I'm burning, and offers to lower the quality of the files to make them fit. Why does this do this with movie files I have that are about the size of a regular movie? I have hour 1/2 video clips that I try to load that wont fit, but retail movie and tv show dvds fit just as much stuff it seems, sometimes more. Can anyone explain this to me?

There are different levels of quality that you can choose to encode the video at. Normally, a single layer DVD can store 3hrs of video at TV quality. The default setting for some encoders like Nero is to only store 1hr of video on the DVD. Obviously the quality is higher, but:

1. It's a waste of the DVD
2. You can't store as much, and the difference in quality is not really noticable under a normal TV screen under normal circumstances.
