I am all of a sudden having an error message appear at startup. I have
Windows XP Home Edition. The message appears after the Windows logo
disappears but before my icons on my desktop appear. The error message
stops all activity. As soon as I click on "OK" in the error message, my
    computer continues to bootup normally.

The message reads in pertinent part as follows: "Windows cannot find
'c:\program'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try
again. To search for a file ...."

Can anyone help me get rid of this annoying error message?

    Thanks,

    Capn Zip

You sure that is the full message - Windows cannot find 'c:\program'.

    http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=tpmod;dl=item5
Scroll down to the download section

    Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.

Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

It has to say more that that! like the program files\program name

Add remove programs - remove logitech desktop messenger

    What is this?? Pando.exe

    Have you run Spysweeper

You may want to print this or save it to notepad as we will go to safe mode.

Fix this with HJT – mark it, close IE, click fix checked

    O23 - Service: .do0xorfgia - - (no file)

Click Start > Run > and type in:

    services.msc

    Click OK.

In the services window find this exact name

    .do0xorfgia

Rightclick and choose "Properties". On the "General" tab under "Service Status" click the "Stop" button to stop the service. Beside "Startup Type" in the dropdown menu select "Disabled". Click Apply then OK. File-Exit the Services utility.

    START – RUN – type in %temp% - OK - Edit – Select all – File – Delete

Delete everything in the C:\Windows\Temp folder or C:\WINNT\temp

Not all temp files will delete and that is normal
    Empty the recycle bin
Boot and post a new log from normal NOT safe mode

Please give feedback on what worked/didn’t work and the current status of your system

OK, I think I did what you suggested, but the error message is still present. This will confirm that there is no program name given in the error message, just "c:\program" In addition, the same expression ("c:\program") appears as the "title" for the error message. You appear not to believe me but it's true.

As to the Logitech program, did you want me to delete this from my computer? It has been resident in my computer for about 18 months.

Pando.exe is a program I just installed yesterday. It is found at pando.com, and is used to make emailing large attachments easier to do and without worrying about email system attachment size limitations. It was written up recently in the NY Times and the Wall St. Journal. The error message I am having trouble with has been present for about a week, so pando.exe should not be the culprit.

As to spyware and viruses, I did two full sweeps yesterday with SpySweeper and Norton Anti-Virus. Nothing was detected.

The following is the latest log from Hijack This:

Do you see all of those O18's - don't you think that is odd and why do you think I said to delete it. If you don't wont to follow instructions let me know and we'll stop this thread!.

I tried my best to follow your previous directions, but I guess I had failed. I eliminated the 018's by deleting the Logitech Desktop Messenger program from my computer. The problem for my computer remained.

I then fixed with Hijack This the O4 HKLM Logitech reference, and that has appeared to solve the problem.

Thank you so much for your help and your patience with me. May God bless.

Just in case, the following is the result of the latest scan from Hijack This for my computer:

Thanks for your advice and pinpointing the cause of the error message. Unfortunately, I was a bit premature in my belief that the problem had been completely solved.

After I did as you suggested (unapplying the restore mechanism and reapplying it), I found that the O4 line we had fixed reappeared after the computer was rebooted. I then fixed it again in Hijack This, and the next bootup was without the error message. However, a scan showed that the O4 line had reappeared. I rebooted with the 04 line present, and sure enough the error message reappeared.

I have, so far as I can tell, removed all Logitech and Harmony remote software off of my computer. In addition, I manually removed the folder Program Files\Logitech from my computer. However, the 04 line keeps reappearing.

    Any suggestions?

I'm really sorry to keep coming back to you on this. Thank you for your patience.

I did as you suggested, but could find nothing close to the logitech line.
Should I send you a copy of what is in the startup section of msconfig?

There was nothing that I discerned that was even remotely related to Logitech. There was one line without any command indicated, but the location was a microsoft windows one.

Is this thread over? Should I start a new one with the more definitive problem?

    Thanks.
