i have recently been given a dell optiflex gx260.
i cannot connect to the internet because my computer will not recognise that i have a functioning ethernet port.
in device manager it is showing no driver installed.
have tried downloading driver on my other pc and installing but to no avail.
i have a steady amber light.
    os is windows xp.
    hope you can help. thanks:eek:

If the driver you tried is the correct one from Dell's web site and it won't even install I think you can safely say that you do not have a functioning ethernet port.

Is this a used PC? If so, was the hard drive formatted and Windows installed fresh, or are you trying to deal with whatever junk has accumulated over the years?

Download from Dell's web site and install the latest chipset drivers followed by the networking drivers. Then check in Device Manager to see if there are any missing drivers to get from Dell (sound, ...).

If the ethernet driver again fails to install the adapter is probably dead.

Maybe this was already done, but a common issue after a new install is that one or more drivers are missing or are generic or out of date drivers from an installation disk.

This is marked "Solved." Has it been? If so, what was the fix?
