I plugged my external portable drive ( 160 GB ) to back up my computer. The computer finds the hwd and states it is ready
for use. But when I go into my computer to show the different drives, it is not there. Puzzled and need some help.
    OS XP Home SP 3.

    Thanks,

    Billjh

    Hi
Could be the drive had a conflicting drive letter assigned to it on another computer...
Head here for Microsoft's guide on how to change or assign a drive letter.

Just ensure you know which drive you are working with, the drive size should help. If you still are in doubt, just open up Disk Management with the USB drive attached, and upload a screenshot.

    Curious indeed...
Try this: with the Disk Management window open so you can see the list of attached drives, THEN connect the external drive.
Does the drive appear and then disappear? If not, head to the Device Manager (click Start > Run, type devmgmt.msc and click OK.)
In that list of devices (possibly very low down), do you see any items with a yellow exclamation mark or red X by them?

What security software do you have on your system? Antivirus, Firewall or an Internet Security Suite?

If I remember correctly, a FAT32 system can`t see an NTFS partition so if the OS is FAT and the external drive is NTFS, this problem could occur.
