I really appreciate being able to ask dumb questions. Here is my question: I have filled up an external hard drive by using it as a back up. So will continuing to back up to the external hard drive just delete the oldest backup? Meaning, should I get another hard drive or may I continue to use the old one. If I do get another hard drive, what do I do with the old data on the old hard drive? Do people have boxes full of external hard drives with backup data just in case you need to go back in time?

Depends on the backup software that you are using and the settings you have chosen for it.

No, not entire boxes but some people have two backup copies and keep one offsite. Generally you should be able to put several backups or maybe even hundreds of backups onto a single drive depending on how much you are backing up and how big the backup device is. There really is no point in keeping a huge amount of backups.
