Recently I installed a second internal hard drive on this computer after using an external hard drive. I put the external hard drive on my other computer. There was something I wanted to put on the external from this computer so I reconnected the external and now it is not showing in my computer when I go to add hardware in control panel I get the message you can only install one device at a time another device installation is underway. I once connected an external hard drive to one of my friends computer and it only showed up after ten hours, am I being to impatient?

Funny this I tried in safe mode and the external drive was found no bother I did what I wanted to do, and then went back into normal mode, where once again the drive was not recognised, does anyone know why this would be?

Try using USB Device Viewer and uninstall any devices that you are no longer using. It would be best if you also remove any devices that are not currently connected. And also remove the drive that is not detected. On reboot, try connecting it again and letting it get redetected.

Thanks Evandil I downloaded usb device viewer and then I connected the external hard drive in normal mode and this time it worked. But I will keep usb device viewer it may come in handy in the future. Problem now solved I dont know how though.
