I have an 80 gig maxtor personal storage 3100 external hdd. had it for about 3 years now. my computer can't read it now. it's making a repetitous clicking sound. did the motor die? what can I do to fix this, if it's fixable.

If it is clicking then the drive itself died. You could take it out and try it inside a tower mounting one drive as master and this one as slave to see if it will run at all to copy off what you need.

would I have to get any kind of case or mounting brackets to put it in?

::edit::: never mind. I figured it out. had a slot it fit perfectly in. my external hdd is now an internal one. thanks.

No and it will not be in there permanently, you can brace it with a book or handhold it if you have to.
