I am experiencing a very slow startup. It is usually at least 5 minutes before I can click on anything to get it to come up.
Shutdown is just as bad.
Have added startup processes also to this post.
I have a Toshiba laptop running XP Home.

53 running processes can't be good. Some of them look a little strange, and I'm sure a lot of those things are not necessary to be running all the time. It must take your machine a significant amount of time to load all 53 things and then shut them all down again, perhaps a reason for your slow startup and shut down.

I'm no Hijack This expert, so let's wait till somebody like Cookiegal comes and gives you some instructions. ;)

way too many running processes

try this

don't uncheck anything with the word AOL in it or anything made by aol

1, go to start

2, click on run

3, type in msconfig

4, click on selective startup

5, uncheck the box that says load startup items

5.5, click on the tab that says startup and check any items with the name AOl in them, and anything that has to do with netgear

6, click on the tab that says services

7, then click on the box that says hide all microsoft services

8, then uncheck everything in the list, but your virus scan, anything that has the name of your printer or lxccc or anything that has to do with ipod

9, apply and click ok then restart

if the msconfig doesnt work to your liking, then you can undo it by selecting normal startup

i only have 9 running processes right now.

everything runs extremely fast

the shutdown is the same fast as windows 98 when you first install it.

my startup runs fast also, after windows xp loading screen goes away the screen goes black for about 1 second then my welcome screen comes up and since i do not have a password on more than 1 account, the welcome screen only stays for about a half a second and the desktop icons are shown and the loading is 100% done

That seemed to work. Do I leave it in Selective Startup or go back to normal?
The first few times it reset a screen came up and warned that I was in selective startup mode. Didn't get it the last time.
Thanks for your help. You guys are great!!
