    Win XP Pro SP2

Previously, the PC had AOL 9.0, with desktop shortcuts associated with AOL.

    I uninstalled AOL 9.

Now, the shortcuts are the IE icon, but I am informed that there is a file association problem.

Same thing happens with newly created internet shortcuts.

folder options > tools > "file types" tab
I set IE shortcuts to be associated with c:\program files\internet explorer\iexplore.exe

I hope you can assist me.

    Thanks for your help.

Is Internet Explorer selected as the "default" browser?

I forgot to mention that point.

How do I make IE the default browser. I don't see such an option in "internet tools" > "programs" tab.

Using the checkbox for having IE check to determine if IE is the default browser seems indirect, but I could try that.

Actually that is exactly what you do.

And if this is IE6 (not IE7) you can also "reset" the settings in the programs tab.

IE 6 SP2 is installed. I did not see an option to select the browser, on the "Programs" tab. The list of programs does not include a browser. Only the check box method is displayed.

I will try the check box method.

    Thanks.

No "reset web settings" on the IE6 Programs tab? That's acually the description of the option.

The caption, adjacent to the reset button, RR, is to reset IE's default home & search pages.

Your suggestion, RR, about telling IE to check, each time, to determine if IE is the default browser WORKED!

A related issue. On the desktop, is an HTML file, with the AOL icon. In "folder options" > "file types", HTML is associated with IE.

This is NOT a shortcut. I right clicked on the icon, left clicked properties. There was no option to change the icon.

The icons may be all right the next time that explorer.exe is started.

The attached should restore the .url icon (IE).
