I have been having a serious problem with explorer

If i try and right click any file, explorer will hang, then my desktop and toolbar goes blank, the tool bar and desktop icons eventually return. The same happens if i left click the file menu button for explorer. Sometimes, (not everytime) a message appears telling me drwatson post mortem debugger has encountered a problem and needs to shut down. explorer.exe returns to the process list in taskmanager.

Please help, this is very frustrating.

    Thanks in advance

Somethings killing explorer when it asks for permission it sounds like. Make sure your firewall lets it through and that there's no conflicting between explorer and your firewall

    Thanks shairel

I tried to down load the newest version of HJT but because I can not right click or use the file menu in explorer, i could not unzip the file. This is the HJT log from the older version.

    Thanks

It's pointless with that old version

go to here and download 'Hijack This!' double click on the file and it will install to C:\program files\hijackthis and create an entry in the start menu and an optional shortcut on desktop.
Click on the entry in start menu or on the desktop to run HijackThis
Click the "Scan" button, when the scan is finished the scan button will become "Save Log" click that and save the log.
Go to where you saved the log and click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" then Paste the log back here in a reply.
It will possibly show issues deserving our attention, but most of what it lists will be harmless or even required,
so do NOT fix anything yet.
Someone here will be happy to help you analyze the results.

I have absolutely no idea what this is except it shouldn't be there

    gsplittm: \??\C:\DOCUME~1\NEWUSE~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\gsplittm.sys (manual start)

go to start/run and type services.msc & press ok

on the page that opens scroll down to gsplittm and right click the entry & select properties

press stop service & then on the drop down box set the start up type to disabled

    reboot & then

Download pocket killbox from http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/killbox.exe & put it on the desktop where you can find it easily

now run killbox and paste This line into the box, select standard file delete then press the red X button, say yes to the prompt

    C:\DOCUME~1\NEWUSE~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\gsplittm.sys

if it says unable to delete then select delete on reboot & say yes to all prompts and let it reboot

Then on killbox top bar press tools and then empty temp files and follow those prompts and say yes to everything

then let me know if it has solved the problem

    No Joy

the "killbox" deleted the file no problem, all temp files were deleted.

But the problem remains, this is what happened.

I opened windows explorer and right clicked the first folder i saw, and as has been happening;everything froze for about minute. The menu bar at the bottom of the screen (with the Start button) disappears, all desktop icons disappear, then the icons and the toolbar return, but not windows explorer.

This might work but I won't guarantee it

    1. Quit all programs that are running.
    2. Click Start, and then click Run.
    3. Type or paste this entry regsvr32 urlmon.dll
    4. then click OK.
    5. When you receive the "DllRegisterServer in urlmon.dll succeeded" message, click OK. then repeat for all the following

    regsvr32 scrrun.dll
    regsvr32 msxml.dll
    regsvr32 mshtml.dll
    regsvr32 shdocvw.dll
    regsvr32 browseui.dll
    regsvr32 actxprxy.dll
    regsvr32 Shdocvw.dll
    regsvr32 Actxprxy.dll
    regsvr32 Oleaut32.dll
    regsvr32 Shell32.dll

Have you got an external usb HD plugged in or some other backup device plugged in

if so try to unplug it and see if that helps
