Solved: file sharing - basics

File sharing work, on a home network, how does this system work.

By this I mean if my wife, my daughter and I are all working on a letter to which we all make alterations at different times and on three different computers where is the letter saved? Are all copies altered when I make an amendment or just mine?

Is it different on an Ad -Hoc network and Infrastructure network?

Can you set up the sytem so that all letters are saved on one computer and we all access that or is that how it works?

Set it up as an Ad-Hoc network, put the file into your shared folder, and everyone should be able to read/write it from there. If not right click the file, Properties, then goto Security,click add, type "everyone" (w/o the quotes) into the box and choose checknames, add it and you should be good

First of all, you cannot all work on the letter at the same time. The first person to open the file will lock it for everyone else. They will be able to open it read-only.

Ad-hoc and Infrastructure are two terms dealing with wireless networking. Ad-hoc allows you to connect to another PC without going through a wireless access point. Infrastructure mode connects only to wireless access points. If you have a WAP (such as a wireless router), this is the way to go.

As far as sharing files, it doesn't matter how you are networked. File sharing will still work the same.

Thanks Guys I now understand File sharing.

The Ad-hoc and Infrastructure information raised another question . I thought Ad-hoc was ethernet hard wired peer to peer networks. Infrastructure was hard wired and or wireless!

Can you solve my confusion please Courtney.

Infrastructure is when you have a gateway such as a router. Ad-Hoc is normally applied to wireless connections with no router involved, but can refer to wired connections as well.

Ad hoc

The connection is established for the duration of one session and requires no base station. Instead, devices discover others within range to form a network for those computers. Devices may search for target nodes that are out of range by flooding the network with broadcasts that are forwarded by each node. Connections are possible over multiple nodes (multihop ad hoc network). Routing protocols then provide stable connections even if nodes are moving around.

Infrastructure mode

Wireless networking bridges (joins) a wireless network to a wired Ethernet network. Infrastructure mode wireless also supports central connection points for WLAN clients.

A wireless access point (AP) is required for infrastructure mode wireless networking. To join the WLAN, the AP and all wireless clients must be configured to use the same SSID. The AP is then cabled to the wired network to allow wireless clients access to, for example, Internet connections or printers. Additional APs can be added to the WLAN to increase the reach of the infrastructure and support any number of wireless clients.

Compared to the alternative, ad-hoc wireless networks, infrastructure mode networks offer the advantage of scalability, centralized security management and improved reach. The disadvantage of infrastructure wireless networks is simply the additional cost to purchase AP hardware.

Note that home wireless routers all feature a built-in AP to support infrastructure mode.
