File sharing / Home Network Setup

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Hi Recently connect to ASDL

i would like to know how to set up my laptop to my desktop with file sharing allowed between both computers.

I am using a Netcomm ASDL Modem Router NB1300 to connect to the internet. Both computers connect to this Via Ethernet cables..

O/S on both computers are Win XP..

Both computers are used at different intervals so both must be able to connect to the internet indvidullay (understand that can not share files if other computer not turn on)

Is this possible to setup with what i have??

all help appricated instruction on set up would be great..

    thanks

If both PCs can access the internet through the router here is one way to set up file and printer sharing.

Run the Network Setup wizard (found in Control Panel of XP). Tell it each of your computers connects to the internet via "residential gateway" and that you want to enable file and printer sharing. Create a disk at the end only if you have a Windows PC other than XP or 2k Pro.

Windows XP firewall (if SP2) will be properly configured by the wizard. You must uninstall or properly configure any 3rd party firewalls on each machine. Unique computer names and same workgroup, of course.

The Shared Documents folder is automatically shared. Any other folders or printers you want to share, just right click on them and sharing ... . When sharing a printer, accept the offer to load other drivers if your other PCs have different Operating System(s).

When you first go into My Network Places there will be nothing there. The first time you click on 'View Workgroup computers' will probably result in great disappointment. It takes awhile (20 minutes or so) before all the computers in the workgroup get up-to-date and accurate lists of the other computers. Often you can speed up this process via Search for other computers.

When computers show up in My Network Places, double click on one to see its shares. If that includes a printer, you can right click on the printer to connect to it.

both computer have the same WORKGROUP name. i can see both computer on both machines, Trouble is....

i can only access the laptop form the Desktop. when i try to access the desktop fron the laptop i receive this error msg..

This is what i dont understand as we have administrators rights on both computers...

    Try this:

Create a file in notepad named FIXANON.REG with the following contents:

------------------- Use text after this line -------------------
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa]
    "restrictanonymous"=dword:00000000
------------------- Use text before this line -----------------

Double click on the file and say Yes to the merge into registry question.

If the FIXANON didn't get you working, did you take care of any firewall on the desktop?

Does the desktop have XP Home or Pro? If Pro, using Simple File Sharing?

Easy file share is turned on (my computer, tools, folder option, view)

i still have to test the fix, hope it works,
