I need help! My bf has a custom white box (?) laptop. His LCD screen was severely cracked. Somehow it has been left up to me to figure out the answers, and I am LOST! We cannot find an affordable replacement of the exact model, so my question is.....Do we have to replace the old LCD with the same thing??
He has a Samsung 17" LTN170WX-L05 panel
Nvidia Geforce 6800 Go video card
Can we just look for any brand with similar resolutions and such??
Thanks for any help you can offer!!
Good Morning Michelle, if the laptop has a suitable socket you can just plug a normal computer monitor to it.
You can research parts suppliers by simply googling replacing LCD screens in laptops.
A typical find will be http://www.lcds4less.com/
There are many sites that explain how to replace the screen but it does require a relative degree of ability to carry out. http://www.dnd.utwente.nl/~grit/backlight/ccft.html
This is a similar process involving replacing a backlight, depending on the machine's age it may also require consideration.
Any operation on laptops requires absolute care, good suitable tools, good well lit work place and proper identical replacement parts.
You can cost the exercise before the undertaking and consider all aspects, the benefit regardless of outcome is experience generated doing these things.
Chances are you may become a technical person and leave the current BF and become involved with a decent type like another technical person! (LOL!)
Cheers, qldit.
If you simply use the Google search engine with the words "LTN170WX-L05 " you will get several hits including the source and cost of that exact screen (and to confirm the above it must be the same, they are all different)

Thanks all. We would definitely like to avoid replacing the entire system, it was just bought in February and it costs more than 3 times that of the screen. This is his "ultimate gaming" machine and doesn't want to dump it.
I found a website the other day (lcds4less.com) that did state some screens are interchangeable..but it doesn't go into much details about that...just said something about resolutions..
PhotoLady -- You say it would have to be replaced with the same brand? Could we use a Samsung but of a different model # (of course same size tho)? He does have a custom built computer (not by him tho) so it's not proprietary like a Dell or anything..
Actually, my guy is a computer tech..just a lazy one! LOL He has many tool, and has already taken the lid panel apart. Which is how we found out what type of screen he has. He likes the hands on stuff, but not the researching trying to find the right parts. I think to him it's the equivalent of a man stopping to ask for driving directions.
And we can't just hook it up to an external monitor because he does a bit of traveling for work and that could be quiet bulky. Also, there are times when he needs to use his laptop at client sites..which would look kinda silly..LOL

I always start out simple, so when his screen was cracked the first thing I did was start googling..that..I'm good at. It's about $600 to buy a new one. I can find similar resolutions and such in other brands on ebay, for much cheaper..which is why I am asking what I am asking.. All of our extra income is paying for our wedding right now..so we are trying to find something as cheap as possible..
G'day, you sound like you have it well in hand there.
Just be careful of Kiwis bearing replacement screens that just got thrashed again at football!
(LOL!)
G'day Kiwi, owsitovathere, fine and sunny here 24 clear..bloody cold night 12!
qldit.
You would be much safer with trying to get the exact same part number. A different part number that has the same screen size and pixel resolution can still have many differences that would make it difficult or impossible to work as a replacement. A different part number might have a totally different input connector configuration and need different operating voltages.
Also, a lower cost cost replacement may have much slower response times and defeat any high speed graphics capabilities of an ultimate gaming computer.
I agree with the above, there seems little standardisation in interface electronics, so it would be a huge gamble buying a non-standard screen.
But if you are about to get married, he will not need to play computer games for quite some time? I am sure other pastimes will intercede ....
And hi qldit, was 3°C here last night. Now (2 pm) it's 9.1°C.
Spent the day at our coastal retreat Sat/Sun, was a little warmer up there.
Football? Only follow Rugby, is there another type of football?

Yes, that 30 pin connector might be be a 32 contact version in another Samsung part with maybe only one or two characters different in the part number. Besides logic and fluid operating voltages, there might also be differences in the backlight configuration as far as voltages and power consumption goes.

Thank you cwwozniak!! You've really helped make this more clear for me. When I found the specs on samsung.com it didn't provide that info, so what I was looking at made it seem (by seeing resolution, pixel..) that they were pretty much the same products.
I have now found the exact screen on ebay for $250 so we're sucking it up and buying it..lol.
Thanks to everyone for your help!
Oh, 1 more question~
His screen has one of the plexi glass things that's in front of the LCD screen for protection and gloss, I'm guessing.. Can he take that off and install it on the new one?? Or is he S.O.L on that one?
If the front plexiglass panel is not physically part of the old LCD panel, and is not also included with the new LCD panel then yes, you would consider it to be part of the PC and transferable.
Ok thanks! Just bought the new screen on ebay (I LOVE ebay), but unfortunately it's no gloss. Just found out the plexiglass thing is called a bezel (sp?) I'm not sure if it's a permanent part of the screen. I'll have him check that out, but hopefully he can put it on the new one.. He really likes that thing.
Thanks for all your help!
