I don't know if the claims you mention are all true, but you are obviously better off not using IE.

Popup blocking and anti phishing may be possible if you d/l the relevant extensions, but I don't know about spyware.

You could try Opera, which doesn't need any extensions, but you may still need separate anti spyware, such as Javacool's SpywareGuard and SpywareBlaster. Both are free but, if you want to keep them available, a donation would be a good idea.

I have Opera, ZA, NOD32, SpywareBlaster, Spybot and AdAware, plus SpySweeper and, as far as I know, am free of infection.
