[SOLVED] format hard drive

    I installed a new hard drive and have some errors when booting up. I just want to format the drive and start over but it wont let me format saying cant use with this version of dos........please help!

    is your start up disk booting?

    I am using windows xp and when i try format at a: it wont let me

    Are you booting with a bootable floppy disk?

    I know nothing about xp but hang out someone will come along.
    In the mean time, is your startup disk booting? if so type in [help] and enter, read up on formating, I had to print it to get it right.

    I'm not that familiar with xp either.....what operating system was the boot disk created under?

    You have to type: format c:
    to format the hard drive. Just format won't work. If the hard drive was set up with NTFS when Windows XP was installed (which is highly likely), you can't format the drive from a boot floppy. You need to run FDISK, delete the partition, and recreate it.

    :D Hello, I just wanted to thank everyone for the help and support and to let you know that using fdisk and deleteing partion and remaking worked. :p
