So they are saying that Anybody still using XP cannot use Gmail unless they use chrome

Hopefully that means that Google have shot themselves in the foot & lost a lot of business

But I see they do say that certain products may have stricter browser requirements. Sort of contradictory. Looks like indeed it's only the current release and one previous one. :(

    they don't
try to go to gmail in IE8 ( or earlier than 15.01 FF) & you get told to update
after November 15 it won't even display or will divert you to a heavily cut down page that will just about allow you to read mail and send very basic emails with no pictures or attachments etc

Yeah, that's why I added post no. 4 above. They say you can create a Google Account with older versions but other applications like Gmail will have reduced functionality if you're not using either IE9 or IE10. :(

I would ditch gmail since I never use it if I was absolutely sure they don't reissue your e-mail address or username to anyone else. I read somewhere it's retired and can't be reused but I'd like to see something official on that. :)

Actually I did help a customer and it seems that they gave 3 options: Install Chrome, Install Chrome/G-Mail Framework for IE, or Don't Upgrade.... who knows what's going on.

This message is different, as it's missing the third option:
