    I've inherited a G4 with 256 MB RAM, OS 9.1 and a CD drive.
Is it worth upgrading to OS X, and how do I go about it?
I'm pretty sure I have some RAM that will fit.

If you can manage to get the computer up to at least 1GB of RAM, then possibly upgrading to OS X might be good. However, for me I'd just leave it as-is. With OS X, the highest you can go is Leopard (10.5), since Snow Leopard is Intel-only. And Leopard isn't as good as Snow Leopard anyway.

What is the max allowed RAM on the computer?

It may be that even Leopard requires DVD not CD drive.

If it runs well in OS 9.1, perhaps consider upgrading to 9.2, but I wouldn’t recommend OS X with that machine.

I got a G4 with 384MB Ram. I recently installed OS X 10.2 Jaguar on it. And it runs fine.
