Hello, everyone

I used to fix friends computers probono back in the day with the help of this site, but amazingly this is my first time posting. It has been so long since I really fixed something this rough that I've forgotten everything I learned from reading posts on this forum. Anyway, any help you could give would be most appreciated!!

I ran Qoofix and tried to run other spyware helpers but the latter were encountering problems. Specifically, NEWDOT~2.dll, w046509c.dll, and w04670c6.dll errors pop up on startup... The blue screen of death flashes on and off too quickly to write down or see what the error is. Here's the HJT log:

Download AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 and save that file to your desktop. This is a 30 day trial of the program
  1. Once you have downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
  2. Select “Change state" to inactivate 'Resident Shield' and 'Automatic Updates' Right click on AVG Anti-Spyware in the system tray and uncheck "Start with Windows". Go to Start > Run and type: services.msc
  3. Press "OK".
  4. In Services, click the "Extended tab" and scroll down the list to find AVG anti-spyware 7.5 guard.
  5. When you find the guard service, double-click on it.
  6. In the Properties Window > General Tab that opens, click the "Stop" button.
  7. From the drop-down menu next to "Startup Type", click on "Manual".
  8. Now click "Apply", then "OK" and close the Services window.
  9. Once the setup is complete you will need run AVG Anti-Spyware and update the definition files.
  10. On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link.
    • Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed. If you are having problems with the updater, manually update with the AVG Anti-Spyware Full database installer from here.
  11. Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  12. Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
  13. Under "Reports"
    • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
    • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
Close AVG Anti-Spyware, Do Not run a scan just yet. We will shortly.

Click My Computer, then C:\ In the menu bar, File->New->Folder. That will create a folder named New Folder, which you can rename to "BFU"

Please download Brute Force Uninstaller to your desktop.
  • Right click the BFU folder on your desktop, and choose Extract All
  • Click "Next"
  • In the box to choose where to extract the files to,
  • Click "Browse"
  • Click on the + sign next to "My Computer"
  • Click on "Local Disk (C:) or whatever your primary drive is
  • Click "Make New Folder"
  • Type in BFU
  • Click "Next", and Uncheck the "Show Extracted Files" box and then click "Finish".
RIGHT-CLICK HERE and choose "Save As" (in IE it's "Save Target As") in order to download Alcra PLUS Remover. Save it in the same folder you made earlier (c:\BFU).

Do not run the Uninstaller and the Remover yet.

Please reboot into Safemode: Turn on the computer. Immediately begin tapping the F8 key. Use the arrow keys to highlight Safe Mode and press the Enter key.

  • While in Safe Mode, Scan with AVG Anti-Spyware as follows: 1. Launch AVG Anti-Spyware, click on the "Scanner" button and choose the "Settings" tab.
    • Under "How to act?", click on "Recommended actions" and choose "Quarantine" to set default action for detected malware.
    • Under "How to Scan?" check all (default).
    • Under "Possibly unwanted software" check all (default).
    • Under "What to Scan?" make sure "Scan every file" is selected (default).
    • Under "Reports" select "Automatically generate report after every scan" and UNcheck "Only if threats were found".
    2. Click the "Scan" tab to return to scanning options. 3. Click "Complete System Scan" to start. 4. When the scan has finished you will be presented with a list of infected objects found. Click "Apply all actions" to place the files in Quarantine.

IMPORTANT! Do not save the report before you have clicked the Apply all actions button. If you do, the log that is created will indicate "No action taken", making it more difficult to interpret the report. So be sure you save it only AFTER clicking the "Apply all actions" button?

Click on "Save Report" to view all completed scans. Click on the most recent scan you just performed and select "Save report as" - the default file name will be in date/time format as follows: Report-Scan-20060620-142816.txt. Save to your desktop. A copy of each report will also be saved in C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5\Reports\ 6. Exit AVG Anti-Spyware

Open My Computer and navigate to the c:\BFU folder. Start the Brute Force Uninstaller by double-clicking BFU.exe

Behind the scriptline to execute field click the folder icon and select alcanshorty.bfu

Press execute and let it do its job.

Wait for the complete script execution box to pop up and press OK. Press exit to terminate the BFU program.

Reboot into normal windows and post the contents of the AVG Anti-Spyware text report that you saved and a new HiJackThis log.

Thank you so much! Sorry this took longer than I hoped to accomplish. First I accidently installed 8.0 in safe mode (the computer was not booting into normal and I changed it with msconfig so it booted into safe mode with networking each time) that caused an unresolveable error... I had to use system restore to get rid of 8.0 then fortunately I was able to boot into normal for a long enough period of time to install 7.5 and reboot without a crash. There is already improvement in that the ieupdate page doesn't come up blank on boot each time.

You have multiple infections and it may take a few different scanners to get it cleaned up.

Please visit this webpage for instructions on installing recovery console and downloading/running ComboFix.

Post the log from ComboFix along with a new HijackThis log.

Save the file to you desktop and name it CFScript.txt

Then drag the CFScript.txt into the ComboFix.exe as shown in the screenshot below.

This will start ComboFix again. It may ask to reboot. Post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Download (save and select your desktop to save it to) SUPERAntiSpyware Free for Home Users
  • Double-click SUPERAntiSpyware.exe and use the default settings for installation.
  • An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program.
  • If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download and unzip them from here.)
  • Under "Configuration and Preferences", click the Preferences button.
  • Click the Scanning Control tab.
  • Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):
    • Close browsers before scanning.
    • Scan for tracking cookies.
    • Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
  • Click the "Close" button to leave the control center screen.
  • Back on the main screen, under "Scan for Harmful Software" click Scan your computer.
  • On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive and all other fixed drives..
  • On the right, under "Complete Scan", choose Perform Complete Scan.
  • Click "Next" to start the scan. Please be patient while it scans your computer.
  • After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click "OK".
  • Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click "Next".
  • A notification will appear that "Quarantine and Removal is Complete". Click "OK" and then click the "Finish" button to return to the main menu.
  • If asked if you want to reboot, click "Yes".
  • To retrieve the removal information after reboot, launch SUPERAntispyware again.
    • Click Preferences, then click the Statistics/Logs tab.
    • Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
    • If there are several logs, click the current dated log and press View log. A text file will open in your default text editor.
    • Please copy and paste the Scan Log results in your next reply with a new hijackthis log.
  • Click Close to exit the program.

Please perform a scan with Kaspersky Webscan Online Virus Scanner
  • Read the Requirements and Privacy statement, then select "Accept".
  • A new window will appear promting you to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky - "Do you want to install this software?".
  • Click "Yes" or select "Install" to download the ActiveX controls that allows ActiveScan to run.
  • When the download is complete it will say ready, click "Next".
  • Click "Scan Settings" and check the option to use the Extended Database if available otherwise Standard).
  • Click "Scan Options" and select both "Scan Archives" and "Scan Mail Bases".
  • Click "OK".
  • Under "Select a target to scan", click on "My Computer".
  • When the scan is complete choose to save the results as "Save as Text" named kaspersky.txt to your desktop and post them in your next reply.

Kaspersky does not remove anything but will provide a log of anything it finds. On August 8th, 2006 Kaspersky updated the software used for Free Online Virus Scanner. In order to continue using the online scanner you will need to uninstall the old version (if previously used) from your Add/Remove Programs list and then install the latest version. To do this, follow the steps here and reboot afterwards if your system does not reboot automatically or it will show 'Kaspersky Online Scanner license key was not found!

I'm very sorry but I just don't know what to do, I copied the text just as you described into Notepad (not Wordpad) and ran it as you illustrated but it won't finish... the command box is still there with a message that it could take 10+ minutes... it's been over a day =/

Should I close it? Revert back to an old checkpoint? What would you suggest?

Did it clean it and should I go to the next steps? Thank you so much for your advice, I had hoped that maybe it was just taking longer than the message alluded to, but the computer can't be that messed up...

Thank you for your guidance, sorry to be a screw up (it's probably my fault)

  • Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

    Code:
    [b]C:\WINDOWS\system32\owinmpdn.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\winpfz33.sys[/b]
  • Return to OTMoveIt2, right click in the "Paste List of Files/Folders to Move" window (under the light Yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • A log of files and folders moved will be created in the c:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles folder in the form of Date and Time (mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log). Please open this log in Notepad and post its contents in your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt2
If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

Now move past the ComboFix instructions and proceed with ATF cleaner and SUPERAntiSpyware.

Click here to download Dr.Web CureIt and save it to your desktop.
  • Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and allow to run the express scan
  • This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
  • Once the short scan has finished, mark the drives that you want to scan.
  • Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
  • Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
  • Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
  • When the scan has finished, look if you can click next icon next to the files found:
  • If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable as you'll see in next image:
  • This will move it to the %userprofile%\DoctorWeb\quarantaine-folder if it can't be cured. (this in case if we need samples)
  • After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
  • Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
  • Close Dr.Web Cureit.
  • Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
  • After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web you saved previously in your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.

I apologize for the delay. I spent three days trying to scan and move the files outside of safe mode. Each time it detected, when I selected "move incurable" it'd crash the computer. Spiratically in between these crashes, the computer would be worse (crash during boo up, etc). Finally I got it in safe mode. When I ran it, in my frustration, I deleted instead of moved... and now I'm really hope you don't need samples. I rebooted and scanned with McAfee as a double check. It now only notes items in quarentine from AntiSpyware so perhaps I misclicked one of them and they weren't all deleted when they should have been. I can check that in the morning tomorrow. I wanted to give you an update as soon as I was successful though and pray that there isn't much more to occupy you. You have been incredibly helpful and patient, more so than I think I could be with such a daunting situation. If you're still willing, I would appreciate any further direction you can offer. Thank you.

I hate to say it but if that HJT log was taken after the Dr.Web CureIt, your machine is still a mess! :(

I don't see any log for Brute Force Uninstaller. Did you run that?
