I have a GM5420 Gateway. I'm trying to install a new CD drive, but there is a metal sheet in the way. I don't know if I can punch it out, or I have to unscrew it. I''m scared to do either because I heard someone had cut their hand open doing it.

    Hi,
    \

Several user guides for this type of Gateway> http://support.gateway.com/s/PC/R/1014159/1014159ul.shtml

Downlaod the user manual for hardware upgrades and maintenance here

    http://support.gateway.com/s/Manuals/Desktops/8512041.pdf

Just click the link, and wait a minute while the user guide downloads and then opens usually with Adobe Acrobat Reader or Foxit Reader, then read through it, shows you how to install or replace an optical drive.

After you get the front bezel panel off, you will see the metal punch plate you must remove to use the drive bay space. They may be screwed in also, but normally you take a pair of pliers and twist them out (pre-punched, they will take hardly any effort to pop out) or a screwdrive used to twist them loose works, too.

Thanks, when I can get to my computer again I will try this. I did see where it might be pre punched. I think I'll wear some gloves to be safe. Thanks.
