    Hello

I have very kindly received a reply to my original thread. I have completed all the instructions included with your reply but unfortunately cannot complete the last part of them. This involves the instruction to download Kaspersky Online Scanner. I can enter this page and have tried to download the scanner. Unfortunately it appears to begin to download but then fails and gives me the following message:

Failed to Load Kaspersky Online Scanner ActiveX Control
You must have administrative rights on this computer
You also must have the IE security settings to the medium level

Given my very limited knowledge, I have tried to check my IE (internet explorer?) security settings and these appear to be set to medium. I do not however understand the instruction that 'i must have adminstrative rights on this computer'. Can you help with this please?

As well as this I was asked to provide the log from the SuperAntiSpyware scan that I carried out. The report I had from this is below:

Perhaps I should also mention that one of the 'symptoms' I am being affected with, and only since AVG found my virus problem, is that when I am on the internet and looking at sites, if I click on a link to another page, and then try to go back again, I am disconnected and all webpages disappear. I am left with the message asking me if I want to report this error to Microsoft or not. I should have mentioned this with my original thread but I assumed it was all connected to the virus. I'm sorry if this has hindered you in any way with helping me.

Thank you so much for your help and I hope to hear back from you.

I'm sorry, I have tried the download you suggested and it has made no difference to the problem with my internet. The fact that you suggested this, does that mean that you think the problem with the internet is not connected to the virus problem? I'm really concerned about paying for things with my credit/cash cards on internet sites like ebay in case I am at risk. Could the problem with the internet be connected to the virus, and would you be able to advise as to whether it's safe to use my cards to pay for things?

Thanks again, sorry to be a pain.

Sorry for the delay in posting. Must have been backup time so my post would not go. :(

I would not use your credit cards until we get a good virus scan.

See if you can do this one:
Click here to download Dr.Web CureIt and save it to your desktop.
    • Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
    • This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
    • Once the short scan has finished, mark the drives that you want to scan.
    • Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
    • Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
    • Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
    • When the scan has finished, look if you can click next icon next to the files found: [IMG]
    • If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable as you'll see in next image:
This will move it to the %userprofile%\DoctorWeb\quarantaine-folder if it can't be cured. (this in case if we need samples)
    • After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
    • Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
    • Close Dr.Web Cureit.
    • Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
    • After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web you saved previously in your next reply along with a new Hijack This log.

    Hi again,

Thanks once again for all your help. I have tried to download the Dr Web Cureit using your 'click here' link, but I could not get this to work. Instead I googled Dr Web Cureit and downloaded the virus scanner from there. I ran an express scan and nothing found. I then ran the full scan and three items were found, 2 riskware and 1 suspicious. Unfortunately, I pressed 'move' instead of 'cure'. I then turned my computer off and on again and tried to retrieve any information I could but there was nothing stored. From memory, one file was called a combination of letters and numbers and ended with .js. The threat identified said ProbablyScript.Virus. This was found in My Documents and Settings/Jan2/TemporaryInternetFiles/LocalSettings/, and I can't remember the rest of this I'm afraid.

The other two items were found in AVG$Vault$, and I can't recall anything else about them.

I'm really sorry that I made this mistake, and hope this does not cause you too much of a problem.

I have re-scanned the complete scan again using Dr Web but it now just says there are no threats found. Try as I might, I found it impossible to view any quarantined/moved items and could not save anything or print a log. (possibly this might be because I downloaded a free version and don't have the full service?).

In addition to this, I have found that since I got the virus my AVG protection has been running a complete scan every time I turn my computer on. Usually this only happens when I request it. I usually only have one icon on the bar at the bottom of the screen, but since the virus I had two, the normal one and one indicating a full scan being run.

Since I have done the Dr Web stuff this evening, only one AVG icon appears now and AVG are only showing two 'virus' threats in the Vault now, when originally there were four. The ones that are still there are:

    Virus Identified JavaByte/Verify - C/DocumentsandSettings/Jan2/Local Settings/Temporary Internet Files/Content.IE5\23QZ6XAJ\count[1].jar

    Virus Identified Exploit.MS05-002 - C/DocumentsandSettings/Jan2/Local Settings/Temporary Internet Files/Content.IE5\WXMBO123\sploit[1].anr

The other two that existed have disappeared, but the original four were listed in my very first thread contact.

Here is my most recent Hijack This Log, I hope any of this helps you to help me. Thanks once again.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
    • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    • Under Main choose: Select All

Read the rest of this before you proceed.
IMPORTANT!! Close all of your applications and browser windows now!

    • Then Click the Empty Selected button.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

That should remove the items in your Temporary Internet files.

Let me know if that works or not. The HJT log looks fine.

Hi cybertech, sorry it has taken so long to come back to you.

I have tried repeatedly to click on your link to ATF cleaner and every time I do it, the page starts to open and then disappears, and once again I receive the Microsoft message, you know the one where it asks if I want to send this error log to Microsoft or not. When I click no to this message my internet connection disappears. I have tried to google ATF and download using Atribune's page but it does exactly the same thing.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks again.

Clear your java cache as described here: http://www.java.com/en/download/help/5000020300.xml

    Restart in Safe Mode.
    • To boot up in Safe mode, continuously tap the F8 key while starting your computer.
    • You should see a black screen displaying the Windows Advanced Menu Options.
    • Using your keyboard's arrow keys, select Safe mode, then hit Enter.

Open Windows Explorer. Go to Tools, Folder Options and click on the View tab. Make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files". Now click "Apply to all folders" Click "Apply" then "OK".

Navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Next navigate to the C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator (Repeat for all user names)\Local Settings\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files".

Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK.

    Empty your recycle bin.

    Reboot.

Try to run Dr Web after that.

Hi, when I click on the link to go to Java Cache, the instructions provided don't seem to correspond with my computer settings. When I click on the Start Menu and go into control panel I am only faced with these options:

    appearance and themes
    network and internet connections
    add or remove programmes
    sounds, speech and audio devices
    performance and maintenance
    printers and other hardware
    user accounts
    Date, time and language
    Accessibility Options
    Security Centre

I do not have an option for Java. If I go into Network and Internet connections then I can navigate through to Internet Options, and I can see an option for deleting Temporary Internet Files. There are three options under this heading, delete cookies, delete files and settings. As I don't appear to have a Java option, should I delete the Temporary Internet Files using this option in my control panel, or can you direct me differently. I have no idea what Java is, sorry!

OK, skip the java part and continue with the rest. You are going to have to close all of your browser windows for the deletion of Temporary Internet Files to work.

    Hello again,

Okay, I've done everything you asked for, apart from the Java cache bit, which you know.

I have ran Dr Web Cureit on both the express and the complete scan, and no viruses/threats found.

Here is my most recent Hijackthis Log,

Only thing to mention I think is that the internet connection problem still exists, but maybe this is a different problem all together, and nothing to do with the virus.

I look forward to hearing from you.

    Log looks fine.

For the internet connection problem I would suggest connecting your machine directly to the modem to see if that connects ok.

    Hello again

Bear with me cause I'm not sure what you mean. I have a laptop which is connected by an ethernet cable to a modem which plugs into a phone line. I can't connect any more directly than it is, I think? I am not operating Wireless.
I am still experiencing problems with my internet and constantly being disconnected and receiving this error report.
Can you tell me if you think the virus has been removed?
