I have installed Half-Life on my PC and when i go to play it, the game is displayed on a quarter of my screen. the menu and intro is all full screen, its when the gameplay its self begins that the screen changes, showing my desktop magnified and the game in the top left corner

the computers spec more than cover the required specs.

    any ideas?

Have you checked your display options, including your rendering method and resolution? Is the game selected as "Windowed" instead of full screen? Does the game itself run at this point?
