Recently, i've tried to upgrade to ME on my system, but it always locked up at the Plug 'n Play Initialization. Then it'd go into ME attempt a scandisk and lokc up again (stupid loopholes). Anyway, i'm back to 98 and went to do Scandisk when i found something very odd: during the surface scan, it'd do about a couple thousand sectors, then go back to scanning files and folders, then when it hit the surface scan, it's start right back where it left off before going back to the beginning of the scan procedure (another loophole), funny thing is it didn't give me any indication of an error.
So, is my drive going south or just being cranky to me?

Make sure no other programs are loaded while scanning. Anti Virus and screen savers will cause that.. Run scandisk from Dos if you want...

    ok, some new info:

Only thing running in the background was nVidia control app. I recently uninstalled my anti-virus software, but there's still some remnants of it for DOS stuff.

Did a Test using Data Lifeguard (it's a WDC 6gb ATA33) and it reported no errors at all.

    I'm still puzzled though

I did it in safe mode, and this is what i discovered.

Scandisk was slower

The amount of clusters it'd do before reseting the scan was varied

in 1hr 20min, it was only 43% done, really slow for only a 6gb HD

I had an error msg popup for both Scandisk and repeating msgs for Explorer

something has to be afoot w/ that last one, since scandisk was the only thing running.

I have seen this before in Safe Mode, though for the life of me I can't remember what the cause was... There are some DLL and VXD files that are loaded in Safe Mode, though most aren't (which is the point of Safe Mode). It would seem that one of these is causing drive access, so you can't run these things correctly.

So, try scandisk in DOS, and install and antivirus program and do a full scan.

k, i finally found out what was going on. It seems my virus-scanners boot block protection was tripping up with EZ-BIOS making it think there were boot virus's when there weren't any.

BTW, how do i remove EZ-BIOS? I've changed my mobo and fdisk'd/reformatted hard drive, but it's still there.

according to MS MY BIG DAY, you have to REMOVE virus checking programs and recommend that you remove IE 5 before loading ME. Put them back in after a successful load of ME..
Also, there is an MS site to test your WIN 98 to see if ME will load. Not at home now, but will try to find and forward Mon Pm,

    Adieu,

To remove EZDrive - boot with the EZDrive disk then go to Advanced options. Disable it and choose OK.

Boot to make sure everything loads correclty. If it does, boot with the EZDrive disk again, go to advanced, and choose uninstall.

I already have ME installed successfully, so that's not the problem. The problem's EZ-BIOS
