This is probably a dumb question, since there are no stupid questions.

If the hard drive from a new Vista laptop is replaced with the hard drive from an old dead XP laptop, will the new laptop boot up so that some files can be transferred from the old drive to a CD or DVD and then the Vista drive reinstalled in the new laptop without causing any problems with the new laptop?

I know about external hard drive enclosures, but was wondering if the above will work.

The hard drive is not the problem with the old laptop.

No. XP installed drivers specific to the machine it was installed on.

Connect the drive as a secondary (on a desktop) and get your files while booted into the OS on that machine (or use an enclosure or adapter). Later, you can use the external for storage and backup.

Or, you could connect it in the laptop and use a bootable CD to retrieve your files, like UBCD4Win, Knoppix, or Ubuntu.
