I have recently set up Windows Vista and from what I can tell, I've used almost double the amount of space I should have.

I recently enabled the viewing of the true administrator account with the command "net user administrator /active:yes" and that account now has all the programs of the current one I'm using on it. Could that be accounting for all the extra space? For instance, I install a program on this account using up 2 GB of space, and it copies it onto the other account, using 4 GB of space in total.

Could this be what's causing the issue, or is this not how it works? How can I stop programs installing on both accounts?

    Thanks.

Are you sure that the other accounts do not have just ACCESS to the new program?

Most compliant programs will as for the program to be install for current user or ALL Users. The program is ONLY installed once and that ALL users have access to it.

What program are you find this issue with?

Well essentially up until now there was only 1 user account. But apparently Vista hides a secret 'true administrator' account. I enabled it to show that, and when I logged onto it, it had all my installed programs (things like Steam, Firefox, mIRC, what have you...) And every time I install things they appear on it now (and no I don't click 'install for all users').

So I'm wondering if I install a program, will it essentially install twice for both users and as a result take up double the file space?

NO, it is just a link to the program(s).
And "The Administrator" account has access to ALL programs.

Winsxs, also takes up a large portion of you hard drive space... it's essential to keep it, but there may be a solution to slim it down in the near future. The other files you're seeing is related to the Vista junction for legacy apps.
