Had to send this via another computer. My browser homepage was victim of a hijack and any page to a tech support help site I get 'cannot access' messages from. My desktop icons only work sporadically. Red shield with 'you computer is infected' message in system tray.

    Here's HJT log:

    Hi, golddust :)

    Welcome to the forum.

Please download the Killbox by Option^Explicit.

Note: In the event you already have Killbox, this is a new version that I need you to download.
    • Save it to your desktop.
Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

    O2 - BHO: WebManager Class - {D5792AA9-D373-4039-8670-2CDAB6A71F15} - C:\Program Files\Torrent101\TorrentManager.dll (file missing)
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ctpmon] ctpmon.exe
    O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present
    O16 - DPF: {9522B3FB-7A2B-4646-8AF6-36E7F593073C} (cpbrkpie Control) - http://a19.g.akamai.net/7/19/7125/40...02/Coupons.cab
    O23 - Service: NTLOAD - Unknown owner - c:\windows\system32\dllcache\win32\winlogon.exe
    O23 - Service: NTSVCMGR - Unknown owner - c:\windows\system32\dllcache\win32\winlogon.exe

Now close all windows and browsers, other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

Go to Start->Run, type CMD and click Ok. The MSDOS window will be displayed. At the prompt type the following and press Enter after each line:

    SC Stop NTLOAD
    SC Delete NTLOAD
    SC Stop NTSVCMGR
    SC Delete NTSVCMGR
    Exit

    • Please double-click Killbox.exe to run it.
    • Select:
      • Delete on Reboot
      • then Click on the All Files button.
    • Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

      c:\windows\system32\ctpmon.exe
      c:\windows\system32\dllcache\win32\

    • Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard.
    • Click the red-and-white Delete File button. Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click OK at any PendingFileRenameOperations prompt (and please let me know if you receive this message!).

If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run Killbox, click here to download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try Killbox again.

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
    • Restart your computer
    • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
    • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
    • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
    • Choose your usual account.
    • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
    • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
    • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
    • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
    • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
    • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
    • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

Finally got around to getting this done. You won't believe this but I couldn't get my Logitech keyboard to let me boot into Safe Mode - F8 key just wasn't working and then after I forget how many tries it worked.

    Hi, golddust :)

Download rustbfix.exe from Here and save it to your desktop.

    • Double click on rustbfix.exe to run the tool.
    • If a Rustock.b-infection is found, you will shortly hereafter be asked to reboot the computer.
    • The reboot will probably take quite a while, and perhaps 2 reboots will be needed. But this will happen automatically.
    • After the reboot 2 logfiles will open (%root%\avenger.txt & %root%\rustbfix\pelog.txt).
Post the content of these logfiles in your next reply.

    1. Please download The Avenger by Swandog46 to your Desktop.
    • Click on Avenger.zip to open the file
    • Extract avenger.exe to your desktop

    2. Copy all the text contained in the code box below to your Clipboard by highlighting it and pressing (Ctrl+C):

Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

    3. Now, start The Avenger program by clicking on its icon on your desktop.
    • Under "Script file to execute" choose "Input Script Manually".
    • Now click on the Magnifying Glass icon which will open a new window titled "View/edit script"
    • Paste the text copied to clipboard into this window by pressing (Ctrl+V).
    • Click Done
    • Now click on the Green Light to begin execution of the script
    • Answer "Yes" twice when prompted.
    4. The Avenger will automatically do the following:
    • It will Restart your computer. ( In cases where the code to execute contains "Drivers to Unload", The Avenger will actually restart your system twice.)
    • On reboot, it will briefly open a black command window on your desktop, this is normal.
    • After the restart, it creates a log file that should open with the results of Avenger’s actions. This log file will be located at C:\avenger.txt
    • The Avenger will also have backed up all the files, etc., that you asked it to delete, and will have zipped them and moved the zip archives to C:\avenger\backup.zip.
    5. Please copy/paste the content of c:\avenger.txt into your reply along with a fresh HJT log .

Note: There are two Avenger reports above. Save the first reports to your desktop. Otherwise they will cancel eachother

    Hi, golddust :)

Yes we still need to scan the computer now that the rootkit has been eliminated, but now I would like to eliminate those folders that are part of of these nasties. These folders look like files. I believe thats the reason SDFix was unable to remove them.

Copy all the text contained in the code box below to your Clipboard by highlighting it and pressing (Ctrl+C):

Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

Please copy/paste the content of c:\avenger.txt into your reply along with a fresh HJT log .

Hi! Well, AVG Anti-spyware picked up a few innocuous items but also a Hijacker.ai (high risk) and removed it.

    Hi, golddust :)

    Congratulations.[IMG]

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programmes changing them. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

    (Windows XP)

    1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
    Click Properties.
    Click the System Restore tab.
    Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

    2. Reboot.

    3. Turn ON System Restore.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
    Click Properties.
    Click the System Restore tab.
    UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK..

    Create a Restore point:
    1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Restore.
    2. In the System Restore dialog box, click Create a restore point, and then click Next.
    3. Type a description for your restore point, such as "After Cleanup", then click Create.

The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.
    1. Spybot Search & Destroy - Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.
    2. AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.
    3. SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.
    4. SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.
    5. IE-SpyAd - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
    6. CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.
    7. Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.
    8. Google Toolbar - Free google toolbar that allows you to use the powerful Google search engine from the bar, but also blocks pop up windows.
    9. Trillian or Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)
To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein.

    Best wishes! [IMG]

Thanks for all the help. I have many of the programs you recommended and I run them regularly, but those special applications really did the trick this time. The weird part, was the only sites I couldn't access were this one, Majorgeeks and a couple of smaller tech support sites. It was if those sites had been targeted. Also the google search engine appeared to be targeted because that wouldn't work. The strange thing, and I'm wondering if perhaps this page is bogus, there was a site called google-analytics that popped up with a page that looked exactly like the regular google page with the exception that it said 'English' in gray type under the Google logo.

    Hi, golddust :)

    1. Enter your Control Panel and double-click on Network Connections
    2. Then right click on your Default Connection
      • Usually Local Area Connection for Cable and DSL, or AOL Connection.
    3. Left click on Properties
    4. Double-Click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item
    5. Select the radio dial that says Obtain DNS Servers Automatically
    6. Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen
    7. Restart the computer
Go to Start->Run->Type CMD and click Ok. The MSDOS Window will be displayed. At the command prompt, type the following and press Enter after each line:

ipconfig /flushdns (The space between g and / is needed)
    Exit

    Restart the computer.

Attempt to conect to those sites.

Concerning Google Toolbar, remove and reintall.

    Keep me posted.

I was saying that those were the sites I couldn't get into before all the previous work was done. No problems now, however, I tried, just to play it safe, this last item and got this message:

"Could not flush the DNS Resolver Cache: Function failed during execution"

    Tried twice with same message

    Hi, golddust :)

Chances are that the DNS Client service is either Stopped or disabled.

    1. Click Start, click Run, type services.msc, and then click OK.
    2. In the list of services, click DNS Client.
    3. Make sure that the Status column displays Started and that the Startup Type column displays Automatic.
    4. If the service is not set to Started or if the startup type for the DNS Client service is not set to Automatic, follow these steps:
    a. Right-click DNS Client, and then click Properties.
    b. In the DNS Client Properties dialog box, click the General tab, and then click Automatic in the Startup type list.
    c. Click Start, click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart the computer and run ipconfig /flushdns at the command prompt.

    Keep me posted.
