I had a bit of a nasty encounter with a virus infestation over the past couple of days…I think I have it just about beat and the “bitdefender” ramparts are up – so hopefully I will not go through THAT again for a while (these aweful bluescreen “stop” messages about windows not loading DO get your heart going a pitter-patter).

Everything is back to normal EXCEPT: when I hit Ctrl/Alt/Delete to bring up the windows Task Manager, the actual Task Manager button is greyed out. A little investigation tells me that “Your Administrator has disabled Task Manager”

Well, I did NOT! And I don’t know how to enable it again:confused: (BTW, I really AM the Administrator, along with everything else…)

    Help – I would like it back…
    Thanks,
    Philip

Run HijackThis and click Do a system scan and save a log file
Your HijackThis log will open in Notepad. Post the contents of the log here

    Save KillBox to your Desktop

Run HijackThis and click Do a system scan only
Put a checkmark next to each of the following entries that appear:

    F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=explorer.exe "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Folders\ibm00003.exe"
    O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - (no file)
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Windows installer] C:\winstall.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [shell] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Folders\ibm00003.exe"
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: wincyt32 - wincyt32.dll (file missing)

Click Fix Checked and exit HijackThis

Run KillBox and select Delete on Reboot
Copy this list of file locations to your clipboard:

    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Folders\ibm00003.exe
    C:\winstall.exe
Go to File>>Paste from clipboard. Click All Files
Press the button with a red circle with an X in it, then Yes when prompted to restart your computer
WARNING: Your computer will be restarted. Any unsaved work in open applications will be lost.
Run HijackThis and click Do a system scan and save a log file
Your HijackThis log will open in Notepad. Post the contents of the log here

Followed your instructions exactly, everything worked as you said it would until I clicked "yes" when prompted to restart my computer.
After a few seconds I got the following:

I clicked "OK" and that message window closed -- then nothing else happened, no automatic reboot.

I then closed Kill box and have not yet rebooted -- should I just hit restart?

(and I'm not sure I understand what jhogel is telling me...)

...While I was waiting...I've cobbled together a little more history -- when I first got the stop screen I couldn't reboot (even into safe mode). I was, however, able to reboot to "Last Known Good Configuration" After that, I went to the bitdefender.com site and did an online scan.

According to the report, numerous viruses were detected and deleted, and a repair was tried on every infected file. None of the repairs were successful, so the infected files were deleted -- succesfully -- except the one you mentioned:C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Folders\ibm00003.exe (bitdefender was unable to delete it, and I could not delete it manually, either)

Earlier today I downloaded, purchased, and ran the full BitDefender9 Professional Plus, and (before I first posted here) I got a clean bill of health, though the abovementioned file is still exactly where it was....

I would like to make a recommendation - Since brendandonhu is helping you witht he log file I would only listen to brendandonhu or someone who is on the HJT log team. This will keep the flow going in the right direction and you will get fixed faster with less problems.

Yes, I agree...my "Answers?" post was actually directed towards brendandonhu, so I will sit tight and keep checking the forum.
My caution in simply rebooting is that the dialog box that read:
"PendingFileRenameOperations Registry Data has been Removed by External Process!"
that I pictured three posts ago was completely unexpected (at least as per brendandonhu's instructions and scenerio) and even though it appears to have a "Killbox" type icon on the left side it looks strange to me -- and I have no idea exactly what it means.
Since I'm flying blind here I could definitely use a knowledgable co-pilot.

I most CERTAINLY don't to get locked out of windows again -- at least not without some instructions as to what I might try next if that were to happen.

What it is saying is that an external process (Program) has removed a registry entry and Killbox is just informing you of the situation. I am just learning about HJT log files and fixing them and am not thoroughly proficient with Killbox to offer any good solution to this particular part of it. I would wait for brendandonhu to arrive back on the scene.

The external process is more than likely the infection that is there.

Ozrom1e -- That's kind of what I thought...it's not what was supposed to happen

Unbidden -- it does look like that registry hack could get Task Manager back, but wouldn't that still leave the little lurking nasty that caused the problem remaining?

Run KillBox and select Standard File Kill
Copy this list of file and folder locations to your clipboard:

    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Folders\ibm00003.exe
    C:\winstall.exe
    Go to File>>Paste from clipboard
For each file, press the button with a red X in it and click Yes>>OK
When all files/folders have been removed, exit KillBox

Then post a new HijackThis log.

What jhogel posted is probably what you need to do: http://www.windowsnetworking.com/kb...ableDisableTaskManagerinWindowsXPHomePro.html

Your log looks ok now, are you able to get into task manager yet?
If not, have you changed the setting in "gpedit.msc" that a couple people posted?
If that doesn't fix it, try starting in Safe Mode and see if task manager works there.
