I'm running xp and I seemed to have picked up a virus which I can't get rid of. First it started popping up WinFixer now it popsup adultfriendfinder. I have scanned with adawareSE and symantic antivirus but they didn't get rid of the problem. I have also ran VundoFix v5.1.7 and it found no infected files either. I have installed HijackThis and here is the output. Please help

You must have a new variant that hids - Right click on Hijackthis.exe and rename the program to puppy.exe

Then run it and post a new log

    First do this

Download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite http://www.ewido.net/en/download/ (W2K/XP Only)
    · Install ewido.
    · Run the application
    · Clickon scanner
    · then select the "Settings" tab.
    · Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Delete".
    · Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
    · Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
    · Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
    · When the scan is finished, Set all items to delete
    · Apply all actions
    · look at the bottom of the screen and click the Save report button.
    · Save the report to your C: Drive
This will take some time to run!
    RE-Boot
Post that log and a new HiJack log

    Please download http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=4 to C:\
    Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
Put a check next to Run VundoFix as a task.
You will receive a message saying vundofix will close and re-open in a minute or less. Click OK.
When VundoFix re-opens, click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES.
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
    Turn your computer back on.
Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HijackThis log.

Things were ok for a bit after I let ewido delete some stuff, but the virus has stepped up a notch and now when I open webpages half the time I get the sysprotect popup.

I re-ran ewido then restarted my computer, then I ran hijack, then I restarted my computer, then I ran vundofix as a task (and I located it in c:\), it found no infected files, then I restarted my computer again manually (vundo didn't ask for a reboot), then I finally re-ran hijackthis. I include in chronological order the logs from ewido, hijackthis, vundo, hijackthis. Note I ran all these apps in normal mode not safe mode if this is important, and thanks for your help its much appreciated.

    O20 - Winlogon Notify: windau32 - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\windau32.dll

    DownLoad http://www.downloads.subratam.org/KillBox.zip

Restart your computer into safe mode now. (Tapping F8 at the first black screen) Perform the following steps in safe mode:

Double-click on Killbox.exe to run it. Now put a tick by DELETE ON REBOOT. In the "Full Path of File to Delete" box, copy and paste each of the following lines one at a time then click on the button that has the red circle with the X in the middle after you enter each file. It will ask for confimation to delete the file. Click Yes. Continue with that same procedure until you have copied and pasted all of these in the "Paste Full Path of File to Delete" box.

    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\windau32.dll

Note: It is possible that Killbox will tell you that one or more files do not exist. If that happens, just continue on with all the files. Be sure you don't miss any.

    START – RUN – type in %temp% - OK - Edit – Select all – File – Delete

Delete everything in the C:\Windows\Temp folder or C:\WINNT\temp

Not all temp files will delete and that is normal
    Empty the recycle bin
Boot and post a new log from normal NOT safe mode

Please give feedback on what worked/didn’t work and the current status of your system

Fixed windau32 in hijack this. Went into safe mode, in normal mode I only have one account 'Owner', in safe mode there were 2 accounts named 'Adminstrator' and 'Owner'. I logged in using 'Adminstrator'. Ran KillBox, clicked delete on reboot all other boxes were unchecked. Entered C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\windau32.dll and pressed the red circle with the cross. It asked if I wanted to reboot now, I clicked yes. An error messagebox came up saying: "PendingFileRenameOperations Registry Data has been removed by external process!". Typed %temp% into run, there was only one file '~DFF9D8.tmp'. Tried to delete it and got a "Cannot delete, it maybe being used by another process" message. Successfully deleted C:\Windows\Temp folder completely. Emptied the recyclebin. Rebooted (note that killbox.exe window was still open, I didn't close it). In normal mode ran hijackthis and got the following log

    I fixed jkkli.dll
    but O20 - Winlogon Notify: windau32 - windau32.dll (file missing) doesn't appear in HijackThis so I couldn't fix it
I hope I am clean, many many thanks. Let me test out internet explorer for 24 hours to see that I don't get popups (sometimes it acts a bit dormant) and make sure my system is still stable. Is there any way I can avoid the vundo virus? My current virus protection seems a bit inadequate.

how do I take the solved falg off this thread?
    I have more problems
it seems my system restore might be infected
my symantec virus protection keeps popping up now and again to tell me its found a virus
the last one was Adware.MaxSearch, in a file called services.dll in a suspicious looking directory, namely C:\program files\Common Files\{50142397-0D48-2057-05040805002c}\

This happened after I did an ewido scan which found nothing but cookies, I also turned off system restore (and switched it back on) to delete all of them. Vundo fix found nothing either. Here is my hijack log (and could someone please tell me how to unmark this thread as solved the thread tools didn't help)

    Nothing shows in the log

    Delete that folder

Go to the link below and download the trial version of SpySweeper:

    SpySweeper http://www.webroot.com/consumer/products/spysweeper/index.html?acode=af1&rc=4129&ac=tsg

    * Click the Free Trial link under "SpySweeper" to download the program.
    * Install it. Once the program is installed, it will open.
    * It will prompt you to update to the latest definitions, click Yes.
    * Once the definitions are installed, click Options on the left side.
    * Click the Sweep Options tab.
    * Under What to Sweep please put a check next to all but system restore:

    * Click Sweep Now on the left side.
    * Click the Start button.
    * When it's done scanning, click the Next button.
    * Make sure everything has a check next to it, then click the Next button.
    * It will remove all of the items found.
    * Click Session Log in the upper right corner, copy everything in that window.
    * Click the Summary tab and click Finish.
    * Paste the contents of the session log you copied into your next reply.
Also post a new Hijack This log.

Here are my spysweeper and hijack this logs. Spysweeper had lots of error lines which I have reduced to make it easier to read (the exact same line appeared hundreds of times). I think it had trouble scanning some really large zip files I have on my F drive. Nevertheless it did report 2 trojans (winlogonhook and rmass) and a few cookies.

I left my computer alone for about half an hour and symantec anti-virus logged the following [pasted below], it also changed my homepage to symantec's homepage. I suspect when my computer does some background processes some sort of virus tries to upload itself, from a system file.

    Risk: Adware.MaxSearch
    Action: Quarantined
    Count: 4
    Filename: A0002479.dll

    Computer: HOME-88067E3C3B
    User: SYSTEM
    Status: Infected
    Current Location: Quarantine
    Primary Action: Quarantine
Secondary Action: Leave Alone (log only)
