I am working on an HP that had 750 instances of spyware (ad aware scan) and 58 viruses (avg scan). I could not even access the network card (could not find or ping my router even!). I finally decided to do a system restore and after hours of updating and installing service packs, running multiple virus and spyware scans etc. I think I may have this thing fairly clean. But, not being an expert, I would certainly appreciate any input on things still to do. I have for ones perusal, an HJT scan. Any input would be greatly appreciated. My goal is to have nothing load at startup other than AVG and ESSENTIAL operating environment processes. HP seems to think that users don't mind waiting 5 to 10 minutes (slight exaggeration) while the system loads with all of their fantastic stuff. Again, thanks in advance for any and all assistance.

Looks okay but do this anyway

Run ActiveScan online virus scan:
http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan.htm

Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button.
A new window will open...click the Check Now button.
Enter your Country.
Enter your State/Province.
Enter your e-mail address and click send.
Select either Home User or Company.
Click the big Scan Now button.
If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it.
It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan.
When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.
Post the contents of the ActiveScan report.

Thanks for replying. Included here is my scan from Panda. Wow! After running Panda, I ran AVGAS and it only found and cleaned?? three. At this point it is time for me to retire to the land of nod. Anyway, here is the Panda report and the AVGAS report run afterwards. Any suggestions (short of chunking this thing in the lake) would be greatly appreciated and followed.

1. Please download The Avenger by Swandog46 to your Desktop.
  • Click on Avenger.zip to open the file
  • Extract avenger.exe to your desktop

2. Copy all the text contained in the code box below to your Clipboard by highlighting it and pressing (Ctrl+C):

Files to delete:
c:\windows\bundles\32wu54rd.exe
c:\windows\inf\polall1r.inf
c:\windows\inf\satmat.inf
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\tvmknwrd.dll
c:\windows\alchem.ini
c:\windows\kwv2.dat
c:\windows\satmat.ini
c:\windows\smdat32m.sys
C:\Setup100.exe
C:\WINDOWS\bundles\WebRebates_Auto_InstallSilent.exe

Folders to delete:
c:\program files\common files\SearchUpgrader
c:\program files\MediaGateway
c:\program files\MyWay
c:\program files\Zango Programs
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Favorites\Casino & Carrers
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\Registry Cleaner
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\SBSoft
C:\Program Files\STC

Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

3. Now, start The Avenger program by clicking on its icon on your desktop.
  • Under "Script file to execute" choose "Input Script Manually".
  • Now click on the Magnifying Glass icon which will open a new window titled "View/edit script"
  • Paste the text copied to clipboard into this window by pressing (Ctrl+V).
  • Click Done
  • Now click on the Green Light to begin execution of the script
  • Answer "Yes" twice when prompted.
4. The Avenger will automatically do the following:
  • It will Restart your computer. ( In cases where the code to execute contains "Drivers to Unload", The Avenger will actually restart your system twice.)
  • On reboot, it will briefly open a black command window on your desktop, this is normal.
  • After the restart, it creates a log file that should open with the results of Avenger’s actions. This log file will be located at C:\avenger.txt
  • The Avenger will also have backed up all the files, etc., that you asked it to delete, and will have zipped them and moved the zip archives to C:\avenger\backup.zip.
5. Please copy/paste the content of c:\avenger.txt into your reply.

I will hold off on doing the above suggested item since my impatience may cause a problem in doing so until further instructed.

Earlier, I read the results of the Panda scan and manually deleted all of the items listed. I then re-ran the scan and came up with only two items. One was a folder and the other was a registry item. I deleted the folder but am not sure about the registry item. I ran another HJT scan and am posting the results of it and the latest Panda scan (pre folder delete). Thanks again for all of your help and I think we are just about to finalize the cleansing of this system.

It was tough, but I finally got rid of the Searchcentrix sentence passed unto me by the Panda ActiveScan and the latest indication is that I am totally clean. :) :) :) I downloaded several "free" antispyware programs (spywarebot, spy sweeper and spyware doctor). Mostly they would only scan for free and fix for money. Luckily they would give the results of their scans. A little regedit and some file and folder deletions and all seems well. Panda is actually running right now, but it is way past where it was finding the problem. I did not want to take up any more resources so I am predicting success and will open a new thread should some surprise arise. Must retire for the evening as it is 3:15 a.m. here. Thanks for the help and I hope this helps someone else.

Good job :)

Now turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer.

Turn System Restore back on and create a restore point.

To create a restore point:

Single-click Start and point to All Programs.
Mouse over Accessories, then System Tools, and select System Restore.
In the System Restore wizard, select the box next the text labeled "Create a restore point" and click the Next button.
Type a description for your new restore point. Something like "After trojan/spyware cleanup". Click Create and you're done.

You can mark your thread "Solved" from the Thread Tools drop down menu.
