Hi,
My Via Rhine 11 Fast ethernet adapter has got lost. Device manger says its there. If I uninstall it then new hardware finds it and reinstalls it. But when I try to use home connection wizard it says its not connected.
I used to have a home network, which is showing up as "a network cable is unplugged" which is garbage. Yes I tried a different cable.
I suspect that when my adsl network fell over while I was away, someone tried to connect the adsl modem to the lan connector in an effort to get it to work.
All the adsl needed was to be reset. But I cannot setup my home network to work.
I'm a bit flumoxed as to where to go from here.

One final thing, its an onboard network card, so i can't rip it out.
The internet is working fine through the adsl/usb connection.
Have ggogled the problem and I've found a reference to http://www.snapfiles.com/download/dlwinsockxpfix.html
which postings have found useful to fix the error.
As I have a microsoft spyware message that I'm not sure why its pooping up, but it suggests a winsock issue, I'll pursue it and get back

You can simply go into the BIOS and disable the on-board Ethernet controller, then add a $10 PCI NIC if you want Ethernet.

In the end, it was what the message from winxp said. "A network cable is unplugged or missing"
I had plugged the cable into the wrong wall socket.
Whoops :)
