Hi All,

I've been trying to defragment my C drive (win98SE) and whenever the programme gets to around 10% it starts again. I've run defrag in safe mode and it worked fine.

I'm just wondering if there's something running in the background that could be causing the problem, how can I find out what is running?

Any help at all would be most welcome.

Regards....CC

Hi CC,

There is a Freeware program called Enditall for closing all non-critical processes.
I use it before Defrag and when installing new software. You have to reboot afterward because it shuts down your firewall, AV, etc.

You might want to try this. Boot into safe mode by hitting F8 upon startup and choosing safe mode from the list and then perform your defrag in this mode. When done reboot and it will go back to normal mode.

Note: If the problem is fixed please mark this thread solved.

Hello All,

Thanks for the help, Enditall did the trick. I installed it, followed the instructions and defrag worked forst time.

Is there anything else I should Enditall for before running? The blurb mentioned burning CDs.

Hi CC,

The reference to CD's is just allowing you to free up memory for burning. If you don't have any problems while making CD's, I would'nt bother using it. For Scandisk, Defrag and new sofware installs, it suits me just fine. It beats multiple CTRL + ALT +DEL entries. :D

P.S. Don't forget to mark the thread closed.
