I have a lot of songs on my ipod but the itunes library they are on is from my old computer which I can't retrieve and put on my new computer. So I have to use a new itunes library. The problem is that I can't add new songs to my old songs on my ipod because I'm using a new itunes library. The only way to add new songs is to erase all the songs on my ipod that were from my old itunes library on my old computer. How do I keep my old songs and add new songs to my ipod without erasing the old songs on my ipod that are from an itunes library on my old computer which I can't retrieve?

you disable automatic synchronization in itunes and then just drag and drop the new songs (click and hold a selection in the main window, and drag it to where your IPod is listed on the left and let go of the button).

you mean drag the songs to where my ipod is listed under "Devices" in the left hand column of the new itunes library?

yes. that adds songs to your ipod without deleting anything on it. just make sure you turn off syncing before you plug the ipod in

I turned off syncing and dragged songs to where my ipod is listed but it didn't work. Am I doing something wrong?

by it not working do you mean:

    1. you get an error
    2. you get an (X) on your mouse when you try to drag and drop to the ipod
    3. your new songs don't appear in your ipod

I think i forgot to mention that somewhere either in the settings, or when you click on your ipod and you get a screen with checkboxes, there is an option for "Allow for manual management" or something like that. That needs to be checked (or unchecked if it says "let itunes manage my ipod" or "automatic management"). I think you can find it if you click on your Ipod that is listed under devices on the left hand side.

2 & 3. Yes I can check "manual management". I'll try that. It seems like Apple makes it hard to add songs to your ipod unless it's from the same itunes library on one computer. If that's true then I don't think it's right.

no... i use my ipod from several computers and do that. I'm sorry but i have no idea. I do know that IPod specifically made it easy after so many people complained a few years back. Manual management needs to be checked for you to be able to do that. If that doesnt work then i do not know what to do.

If the songs were purchased online, they need to be listened to at least once all the way through before putting them on your ipod

Looking for the problem online it seems other people are also unable to manually manage their music. Uninstalling and reinstalling Itunes helped some. Others just chose to use ephpod.
