I really dont know how to kill this thing. I have Panda Platinum 7.0, Microsoft beta anti spyware and spycleaner running on my system. no matter what i do everytime I change internet screens or log on to the internet then up it comes. I have the site blocked using the various IE security settings, and the windows xp service pack 2, which means the content doesn't come up but the window keeps opening. Can someone please help me get rid of this thing. I am at the point of going to the "end it all site" to wipe everything of the computer. But I don't know if that would even work. I thank anyone in advance for their help.

    Hi and welcome to TSG,

Please do this. Click here: http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/hijackthis_sfx.exe
    to download Hijack This.

It’s very important that you save it to its own folder on your hard drive, such as program files (not temporary files or the desktop), so that it can create proper back-ups and be able to restore them if necessary.

If you have anything unchecked in msconfig go to run – start – type msconfig and put a check beside every entry so that it all starts up.

Close all open windows and open Hijack This. Click “Scan”. When the scan is finished (it only takes a second), the scan button will change to “Save Log”. Click on “Save Log” and then save it to NotePad. Click on “Edit” – “Select all” – “copy” and then “paste” into the thread.

DO NOT FIX ANYTHING YET, most items that appear in the log are harmless or even needed.

    Hi Cookiegal
Thanks for your prompt reply. I am waaaay out of my depth here so your time and assistance is greatly appreciated. I am not sure if I have done this the right way but here goes. I tried the msconfig run but everything was already checked except under the startup tab. i highlighted everything under it and the computer then booted up in safe mode. oops. So i unchecked the safe mode option and one other one (no idea).

Rescan with Hijack This, close all browser windows except Hijack This, put a check mark beside these entries and click “fix checked”.

    O21 - SSODL: SystemCheck2 - {54645654-2225-4455-44A1-9F4543D34545} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\vbsys2 (file missing)

Then boot to safe mode (see how below), locate and delete these files and/or folders:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\vbsys2 - file (it may not be found as it's missing but look anyway)

How to restart to safe mode:
    http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPOR...2001052409420406?OpenDocument&src=sec_doc_nam

Because XP will not always show you hidden files and folders by default, Go to Start - Search and under "More advanced search options". Make sure there is a check by "Search System Folders" and "Search hidden files and folders" and "Search system subfolders"

Next click on My Computer. Go to Tools - Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and "Hide extensions for known file types". Now click "Apply to all folders"
    Click "Apply" then "OK"

Your log indicates that you're still running in selective start-up mode. Please reboot in normal mode and post another log.

Thanks Cookiegal. I checked the box next to os21. the system ran and then a message came up saying it could not find something then it was gone so I could not check what it was. I ran another check and it was gone.
I found the vbsys2.dll and the vbsys2.old which i deleted.
I found all the boxes regarding files and checked the boxes.

    Hi Coopkiegal,
It's all fixed. Thankyou so much for your help. Do you have any hints on how to learn more about what this log means and the programs that are running on my system. Thanks again.

    Great! You're welcome. :)

Now you should turn system restore off to flush out all previous restore points and then turn it back on and create a new restore point:

    http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPOR...2001111912274039?OpenDocument&src=sec_doc_nam

I also recommend downloading SPYWAREBLASTER & SPYWAREGUARD, for added protection.

    http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

Read here to see how to tighten your security:

    http://forums.techguy.org/t208517.html

    Delete your temporary files:

In safe mode navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Go to Start > Run and type %temp% in the Run box. The Temp folder will open. Click Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

    Empty the recycle bin.

In the link provided above you will find the Hijack This tutorial which explains each entry and what they all mean.

You can also research applications and programs to find out more about them at these sites:
