Example: You have a system that will not boot into normal/safe mode but you can boot from a bootcd. Which file can tell you the version of Windows that is running? Also, is there a way to find the Service Pack installed?

    Thanks!

I was able to find that the OS was vista by using a windows 7 recovery cd (shows Vista in System Recovery Options window). I'd still like to be able to tell if a system is Vista vs 7 by looking at folder structure.

If you can boot up to the desktop, type Winver into the Start or Run box.
You can also look in the Control Panel - System.

Just look at any system file's properties and check its version.
