I have tried booting into safe mode in Win XP. I hit the F8 key when I am supposed to and it takes me to a screen where I must choose the boot device (it displays all my drives). I also have the option to hit ESC and just use the "default" settings.

So I choose the boot device (my C drive) and my computer boots up. However, there is no indication that i am, in fact, in safe mode.

I know that in Win98 and Win95 you know you are in safe mode because a pop up comes up and tells you so plus your video is all different. Also, you cannot connect to the internet in safe mode.

However, in XP, everything looks the same, there is no pop up message telling me i am in safe mode, and I can connect to the internet and use all my programs.

So how do I know I am actually in safe mode in Win XP?

    Hi cxm322

It should say Safe Mode in all four corners of the screen.

OK. That's what I thought, just like WIN98.

So my problem is, my computer is not booting in safe mode when I want it to. How do I go about booting in safe mode. Maybe I am doing something wrong?

(I am very new to XP so excuse my ignorance)

Well it can be reached a couple different ways... not all PC's get to safemode the same f10 and f12 are used as alternate keys depending upon your system. For instance, IBM uses the f12 key to get into the bios, not the f8 key. What model/type of system do you have...? You can also get into safe mode with the windows XP disk, but I dont like that option as much as I like the first one, try different 'f' keys at the XP boot up screen. Unless EA has a better suggestion.

My system is not IBM, HP, or whatnot. I had my system built by Cyberpower. The motherboard is an ASUS P4P800SE with American Megatrends BIOS.

I should note that I jsut noticed that during my POST it tells me...

    Press DEL to run Setup
    Press F8 for BBS PopUp

So I am guessing that the F8 key has been assigned to something else other than safe mode. I believe it is used to just choose the drive to boot from.

What other common keys are used for safe mode?

    Hi

On my ASUS mobo it's F5 - gives you a whole raft of choices. I suspect yours will be the same key.

    Regards

cxm when you press the f8 key it will give you a boot menu, choose your hard drive. as soon as you press enter start pressing f8 again.

if you are on broadband, starting windows in safe mode with networking should give you internet access

    Rob

That has no effect - it has to be F5.

Guys, I figured it out. I have to hit the F8 key AFTER my megatrends POST screen.

On my old system with W98 I had to hit F8 as soon as the POST started.

    Thanks

BTW, I also tried the F5 key. You are both right. I can enter safe mode using both the F8 and the F5 keys. However, with the F5 key, I do not have to wait until after the POST like I do with the F8 key.

F8 is normally the most common key to get you into safe mode, I wonder why motherboard manufacturers cannot get together and standardize all these pre operating system keys, it would make life a lot easier.

Rob I agree totally. BTW, apologies - I didn't mean to offend - but, guess what, F8 does not work for me - I can only use F5.

No offence taken so no apologies needed.
I never know which key to press to enter pre operating system menus when working on different computers. Normally I just keep running my finger across all the f keys during startup. Works every time.

LOL. :D I thought about doing that but I was too afraid to do it because I didn't know if I'd mess something up.
