Solved: how to format c drive

I have aquired a gateway solo 5300. I want to reformat and install xp. when i run format c: i get a message that volume is in use, when asked to force closed I get message volume still in use. How can I format the c drive?

you should get to format your drive when you install xp but you have to choose custom install them you should see[ more uption] on your right .
click on it and it will take you to format .
or you could use any window install cd then when you are done with formating your drive just cancel the installation .
this what i do any way

Start a normal XP install by booting from the XP CD and when you get to the part that asks where you want to install to Delete the existing partition(s) and create new one(s). Then format the first partition, I recommend you use the NTFS Quick option. Then follow the onscreen instructions for the rest of the install. Make sure you have the XP key ready !

Thanks for the help formated and installed 98 2nd ed. now trying to find a way onto the net

After install of 98 2nd I was not very happy with it so, I reformated and installed XP Pro. running well now and am satisfied with results. Thanks very much for the help and will be reading the forums and maybe find something I can put to use.
