How do I get my data off, if I have to use the Restore console?

I can't seem to even get into Safe mode for the kernel errors

BartPE should allow you you to do that, instead of Recovery Console.

The end solution was the nifty USB to SATA/IDE adapter. Slick device and paid for itself in the work it has saved me.
