*reinstalled scanner HP5100C. *Connected printer HP Deskjet 722C first...then connected Scanner. Didn't work. Reinstalled again.. *connecting Scanner first, then Printer. (Tech's suggestion). No luck...
    * Scanner connects with Printer perfectly & prints out excellent copy. When attempting to start Scan, sign comes up "Scanner being accessed by another application".
*Downloaded driver from HP. In Temp folder Sj259upd, unzipped it, clicked Setup for Scanner. Asks: Do you want to update HP Scanjet scanner driver?...OK..Shut down PC..
*Tried to Scan: Sign: "Scanner currently being accessed by another application."
*HP Help suggests installing STIMON:EXE, which I was able to do.
*HP Help suggested installing also hpsjvxd.exe or hpsjvxd.vxd: Could not, as they were missing from Ctrl/alt/del
Suggests inserting Win98SE to install them but I don't know where or how to find those files.
*Went to System, Device Manager. Under OTHER DEVICES
HPC5190A is yellow question mark...Code 28..driver not installed.
Clicked: Search for updated driver: Comes up: Unable to locate driver: Unknown Device.
*Inserted Win98 SE into drive: Selected search for updated driver: Unable to locate Driver: Unknown Device.

After completely uninstalling ALL related info
from System and Programs & reinstalling I still get the sign: "Scanner presently being accessed by another application".

I'm at my 'wit's end'...I had done a System's Recovery & reinstallation of 98SE and was starting fresh with no junk in the background & thought reinstalling scanner would be a snap...HP Printer hooked up easily... Can anyone suggest a solution?
    Thanks.

    Hi Fransey, welcome to TSG.

Can you tell us what point everything is at now.....in device manager......the driver for the scanner will be on the Scanner installation cd if it still shows code 28 there....you may have to help it find the correct directory for the driver on the cd instead of just pointing it to the cd......

Note: Scanner never has given me any problems.
When disconnected to do a Sys Recovery was in perfect
    working order.

****tell us where everything is at in device manager.....

*Under Device Manager: Other Devices: Yellow Question
Mark: HP C5190A Code 28 Driver not installed.

****the driver for the scanner will be on the Scanner installation cd if it still shows code 28 there....you may have to help it find the correct directory for the driver on the cd instead of just pointing it to the cd......

*I have the updated Win98SE Scanner installation cd...How do I extract it from that cd?

I appreciate your help. Bye. Fransey

    Did the following:

*I inserted HP Scanner Installation CD, clicked Browse
    CD........then
*Brought up System, Dev Mngr, Other Devices,
    HPC5190A--tried to reinstall driver...entered G:\ drive where
CD is inserted...Says Driver NOt Installed.

*entered C:\Windows\Temp where downloaded driver is: No Go
*entered C:\sj259upd where driver is: No Go
    ...Still says Driver not installed.
    Exited Installation CD.

    **Inserted Win98 SE.
Found list of drivers w/yellow question mark atop.
Shows an index of all drivers installed in Win98 CD.
**HP5100c IS listed among them, under heading of
scanners and cameras..... However, this is just a
list...I am not able to highlight that particular driver.
**Brought up System, Dev. Mngr, Other Devices,
    requested Reinstall Driver...chose G:\Win98...NO GO
Still says Driver not installed. Exited Win98 cd.

Am I not entering a request properly?
Should I uninstall everything (deleting all info in Add/Remove and Device Mngr) again, and reinstall it, printer installed first, as in the original installation?
    Thanks for your assistance.

On the scanner cd, when you click browse to find the driver, scroll down thru the other directories.....you can't just stop it at G:\ --- more than likely it's not going to find it.....look for a driver directory, win98 driver directory, something similar......

**Inserted Win98 SE. Found a group of drivers w/folder for
Printer, but n folder for Scanner. In same group: Found index of drivers w/yellow question mark atop.
Shows an index of all drivers installed in Win98 CD.
NOTE** HP5100c IS listed among them, under heading of
scanners and cameras..... However, this is just a
list...I am not able to highlight that particular driver.
**Brought up System, Dev. Mngr, Other Devices,
    requested Reinstall Driver...chose G:\Win98\DRIVER...NO GO
Still says Driver not installed: Unable to locate a driver for this device.... Exited Win98 cd.

    **Just inserted HP Installation disk.
Found 3 folders: ScanMgr, APP, Oppro.
Each had a driver. Clicked Properties & found ea
    had address: For instance: G:\English\ScanMgr\Disk2.
Went to Device Mgr, to Other Devices, to HP C5190A,
to Driver...Filled in each Folders address leaving the
cd in the slot. Each came up with same: "Unable to locate a driver
    for this device."
    Removed CD.

**Just for the heck of it, brought up Scanner to scan:
Note immediately comes up: "Unable to access as scanner is being accessed by another application."

Don't know what else to do!

    Do this for me:

Start, Settings, Click Control Panel. Double-click System, click Device Manager Tab. Click View devices by type. Find your scanner(there is probably an exclamation point)- double-click scanner, Property box will pop up, Click the General tab, look for Device status, this will tell you whether there is a conflict. Click on the Resource tab. Towards the bottom there is a box called Conflicting device list. This is where you should find your conflict.

I have 2 of these scanners and have had this problem repeatedly. I have tried everything short of getting a bigger hammer and have found the only thing that works is to go to Control Panel>Scanners and Cameras and delete the scanner and reboot. Window always finds the scanner and it works fine until the next time. Chaining the scanner and printer has never worked. HP just isnt what it used to be.

++Click the General tab, look for Device status

**Under Device Status: sez Code 28... Driver not installed.
Clicked Reinstall Driver: sez Unable to locate driver, unknown device.

++Click on the Resource tab....Towards the bottom there is a box called Conflicting device list. This is where you should find your conflict.

**There is no Resource TAB or Conflicting Device list in either
Devices by Type, or Devices by Connection section.

**The HP scanner has always been hooked in-line with the HP printer and hasn't been any problem til now.

    I appreciate all the help.

At this point, do you have the choice to select "browse" to manually locate the driver?

Just now, decided to Uninstall, then reinstall scanner.
(for the 4th time)..this time with the printer already
    installed..(but unhooked from scanner box).
Last installation was made hooking up scanner
before the printer..(advice from CompUSA tech).

Tried to ADD/REMOVE scanner files...box sez "Error,
unable to remove or already removed."
SO...I Manually removed scanner files from EXplorer
and files from Systems Device Manager...HOWEVER,
when I rebooted, sign came up saying "Missing Shortcut.
    hpppt.exe", which wouldn't go away....

SO, I recovered the deleted scanner files from Trash (not the
Device Manager files) ...and the 'missing shortcut' sign went
    away.

Decided to reinstall scanner anyway, over the
top of the existing scanner files. (Ignorance is bliss!)

LO and BEHOLD, it installed, asked for Win98 SE
where the driver is, and it installed completely and
it printed out a test page as it has done each time I installed it..
(Prior to this, it did not ask for insertion of Win98se, where the
    driver was..)

I then scanned a page into the scanner to
WORKS and VIOLA !! IT WORKED!!!!!

Why I think it would not scan:
    1. Prior to first two installations I was having trouble
with Drive G due to dust within slide-in. I believe that
    was the initial problem....

I Had it cleaned at CompUSA & mentioned scanner prob to
Tech. He suggested installing scanner before printer...

Reversing the procedure did not work...it did not allow scanner to access some important file, I guess. That's when I turned to you for help. ADD/REMOVE just indicated they weren't there; so did Device Manager all this time, but they were there! I could see the files in Explorer.

    2. After I just reinstalled the scanner following the original
instructions, with the drive cleaned, with printer before scanner, everything fell into place and I can now scan again.

Thank you all very much for your time and caring. I really
    appreciate the help. Bye. Fransey:p
