Recently, I found 7 error files on my desktop all called "hs_err_pid" followed by a four digit number; looking at the content they suggested that "A fatal error has been detected by the Java Runtime Environment"

Looking at this previous thread I realise that I am likely to have the same problem

    http://forums.techguy.org/windows-xp/877051-solved-hs-err-pid.html

However, I checked what "SP" I had, and it was SP2 instead of SP3

Does this make a difference to what I need to do?

No, the service pack number makes no difference to the procedure for that particular problem.
All service-pack levels of XP use the same Java version.
Just uninstall all Java items listed in Add/Remove Programs, then download & install latest version.
