I have recently purchased an NEC ND2500A DVD Writer, but I can only get it to record onto CD-RW's - (haven't tried a CD-R yet). According to the manual I don't need to install any drivers as XP has them already, and it should be able to deal with DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW, CD-R and CD-RW. I have used Nero and Deepburner to try and burn my DVD but every time I try it says that the drive is a CD-R drive or that the media in the Writer is unwritable! Before I try and burn anything the drive is listed as DVD-RW, but changes as soon as a DVD is put in. I am currently trying to write to a DVD+RW. The file I am trying to burn is an MPEG, but I have also tried to create a DVD direct from Pinnacle Studio 8 (Digital camera movie maker package), but neither works.

Any ideas?

Cheers

Make sure that in Nero you are selecting to do a DVD project and not a CD project. I would also recommend getting the latest updates to NERO: http://www.nero.com/us/nero-up.php

Its also not uncommon for a particular DVD burner not to like a particular brand of DVD disc's - try another brand if possible.

Also see if you have the latest firmware for your burner, this is from a German site:
http://www.de.nec.de./softwareoverview2.php/id/1019/mode/D/gid/59|57|

Approved/tested media: http://www.de.nec.de./software/1579_Media_List_for_8x_DVD_Writer_(1.07).pdf

Or it could be just a bad drive.

I have downloaded the upgrades you suggested and flashed the drive, but still no joy. When the disk is listed in My Computer it shows as DVD-RW, but I am trying to use DVD+RW at the moment to record to. Do you reckon its worth trying some DVD-RW even though the drive says it can do both?

Cheers for your help.

It might just not like that specific brand you are using, it wouildn't hurt to try another brand and type.

Yep I've sorted it. DVD-R and RW's work rather than '+'. The gumpf supplied says it offers all types - but omits to say that it only writes to '-'! Anyway sorted, so cheers for your help. :)
