I have "fixed" this several times in HJT and it just keeps coming back. When it does come back, my SpyGuard catches it and then I have about five popups telling me that something is trying to change my hompage. During that time I also get a virus warning from AVG saying they have detected the Trojan Horse HomePage .16.M. Can someone tell me what is going on? Am I missing something deeper? Thanks for the help.

Which are you using – NetZero or AOL as there is some minor cleanup to be done also

To be safe lets do both

    Download CWShredder http://www.intermute.com/spysubtract/cwshredder_download.html
    Close all browser windows,
Open cwshredder.exe then click "Fix" and let it run.

    Download About:Buster from:
    http://downloads.subratam.org/AboutBuster.zip
Double click aboutbuster.exe, click Update, click OK, click Start, then click OK.
This will scan your computer for the bad files and delete them.

Print this and boot to safe mode
    Fix these with HJT

    View Hidden Files
Open Windows Explorer. Go to Tools, Folder Options and click on the View tab.
Make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked.
Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files".
Now click "Apply to all folders", Click "Apply" then "OK"

Well this is nuts. When I hit F8 or Ctrl to go into safe mode, the timer is set at 0 seconds remaining. It just goes right on into windows. AAARRGGH!!

You have to start tapping f8 at least every second at the first black screen after power up

Ok..I fixed the safe mode problem. It had to be fixed in msdos.sys. The default was set to 0 instead of 30 seconds. Anyways, I did all that you said and here is the new logfile. Let me just say real quick that once I re-booted and brought my home-page everything was fine...until, I started spyguard which instantly came up with the pop ups everywhere saying something was attempting to change my homepage again.

Try fixing this item in HijackThis, I think it might be what Spyguard is complaining about

I was wondering about that little booger when I saw it. Here is the new log file. BTW, when I rebooted spyguard did not come up with anything :) Does it make a big difference if your doing the fix in Safe Mode. When I did this yesterday I wasnt using Safe Mode and it kept coming back after about an hour.

    SpywareBlaster http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
    AdAware SE 1.05 http://www.majorgeeks.com/download506.html
    SpyBot S&D 1.3 http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/

DL them (they are free), install them, check each for their
    definition updates
and then run AdAware and Spybot, fixing anything
    they say.

In SpywareBlaster - Always enable all protection after updates
SpyBot - After an update run immunize

Print this and boot to safe mode
    Fix these with HJT

You run 98 and there is something we can use to look for a super hidden dll which is the reinstaller. It's run entry is hidden to hijackthis but not to Start Dreck. This usually works. Let's hope you have some luck.

    Go here and download StartDreck

    http://www.niksoft.at/download/startdreck.htm

    Unzip and run StartDrek.exe:
    Click config
    click Unmark all
    Check these boxes only:
    *Registry->run keys
    *Registry->Browser helper objects
    *System/drivers> Running processes
    Click ok.

Click save. Name the log. Start the log you just saved. Run it in Notepad.

Copy and paste the contents of the log into your next reply here.

Once we get the file name from that log, we'll delete it's load point in the registry, reboot and the file will be visible. We'll delete that. Then you can clean up as you did before and the hijack will no longer be reinstalled.

turn on TeaTimer in SpyBot -

MODE - ADVANCED - TOOLS - RESIDENT - Check both boxes
Make sure you run immunize after an update

It will alert you when something is trying to change the registry and will keep you cleaner

You are clean again, be careful where you go!!!!

Thanks for all the help MFD. I have no idea where I would go that would cause this, but I guess these little buggers are everywhere. I will wait to see what Mosaic comes up with now on the StartDrek log.
