    Hi
    can anyone help?
I can't open word files that are email attachments. I can open word from start menu and open and edit saved files, but I can not get it to open files from email attachments. When I click on the download button, it downloads and the word window comes up, but the file itself does not appear.

What program are you using for your email?

What happens when you double click the attachment?

I have a yahoo email account and use explorer or firefox.
When I double click on the attachment, the download box opens, it looks as if it downloads, the word program then opens, but there is no file there, just a blank greyed out screen.

ahh! Davea...Thank you! It works that way...why didn't I think of that!

Why do you think it doeas that? Although its good that I can open them now, do you think there is a way that I can get it to open straight from download, rather than saving first?:)

Some of the web based email programs are blocking the opening of attachments and therefore they must be saved to the drive and then opened.

    Hi-
If you are using Office 2007, the Word files are actually stored as archives on your mail server. If you are using Internet Explorer as your browser, there is an issue with Explorer not using MIME types to recognize attachments, instead, it somehow finds the file on the server, and, seeing that it is an archive, fails to open it. Office 2007 now uses XML standards for its files, you may have had ( or you may yet have an opportunity to see ) how these files are actually stored. It is very different than previous versions. Notice the "x" appended to the file extension. This denotes XML.
