When you hit the Start button (but before going to All Programs), you see a list of of programs you've used. How can I customize that list? I know how to delete, but how do I add a program??

I don't think you can add a program to the list. It is meant to be a list of frequently used programs. Thus, if you keep on deleting items off the list, eventually, the desired program will show up.

...at which point you could right-click it and select "pin to start menu" and it will remain there

As many things you can customize on a PC, it seems like it should be easy.. Oh well.... Thanks for your help.

There are two areas in the left column of the Start Menu.
The upper area is the "Pinned" area and the lower is the "Recent" area.
As noted above right click and select Pin to Start Menu.
The Recent area is added by the programs that you have used.

To delete any of them, just Right click the entry and select Delete.

Thanks Metallica and Dave, that works perfectly. When I choose "Pin to Start Menu," it pops up in the "Recent" list. Problem solved.
